Letters received, ca. 1849-1878.

Collection consists of letters received from ca. 70 artists (almost all British), including David Roberts, Clarkson Stanfield and William Powell Frith. The letters primarily concern commissions, works in progress for Hargitt's collection of cabinet-size paintings, and the paintings of his son, Edward. Notes from Hargitt appear on the verso of two of these letters (from John Phillip and Edouard Frere). The letters from John Linnell and John Burr include illustrations. Also included is a copy of the auction catalogue of the Hargitt collection, which was held in Liverpool (1881) following his death.
