100 Calotypes by D. O. Hill R.S.A. and R. Adamson. [ca. 1843-1845].

Photographic album produced by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, which was either given or sold to Clarkson Stanfield in 1845. While the title of the album suggests there are 100 images, the album actually contains 109 salted paper prints, most with inscriptions provided by either Hill or Adamson. The images are of prominent men and women of the day, friends and acquaintances of Hill and Adamson, scenes of Edinburgh, Newhaven, and St. Andrews, and Scottish architecture and art. Sitters include James Nasmyth, Sir John Gladstone, Alexander Monro, and Lady Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake. The Gernsheim Collection also includes the Hill & Adamson Collection, comprised of 125 items (122 photographic prints, 2 oil paintings, 1 lithograph) which is cataloged separately. The Photography Collection also includes a limited edition folio (unbound), comprised of 46 carbon prints made from original Hill & Adamson calotypes and one plate taken from a late portrait of D. O. Hill, which is cataloged separately (call no. f TR 680 E44 HRC-P).
