Autograph letter signed from Joseph Jefferson, Hohokus, N.J., to William Winter, London [manuscript], 1884 August 7.
Jefferson, Mrs. J, and Josie have decided to go to England next May. He does not yet know if he will act or not; if he does, it will only be Rip [van Winkle] - "they would not stand [his Bob] Acres in London." Is glad Daly's company made a hit, and Mary Anderson's triumph is a still greater satisfaction to him. Evidence on accompanying envelope shows that this letter was forwarded from London through a F. Burgers, Esq., Church End, Hinckley. Addressed "My dear Willie" and signed "Joe."

Yandell, Enid Bland, 1869-1934. Enid Yandell : papers, 1875-1982.
Title:
Enid Yandell : papers, 1875-1982.
Papers focusing on the life of Enid Yandell, born in Louisville, who became one of the first woman sculptors to achieve widespread recognition. Family correspondence, 1878-1930, traces Yandell's life work as an art student at the Cincinnati Art Academy, as a pupil of Philip Martiny and Lorado Taft in Chicago, Karl Bitter in New York, and Frederick MacMonnies and Auguste Rodin in Paris, France, and finally as an accomplished sculptor in New York City and Edgartown, Mass. Letters from family members, especially her mother, Louise Elliston Yandell, provide insight into the personal and social lives of a prominent Louisville family, and reveal the family's financial struggles as a widowed mother attempts to provide the best opportunities for her children, especially Enid. Professional correspondence, 1887-1929, concerns Yandell's professional career, various commissioned works, acquaintances and friendships formed with a number of prominent persons, and her social service, especially with orphaned children during World War I. Correspondents include sculptors Auguste Rodin, and Gutzon Borglum, artist Thomas Alexander Harrison, architect Daniel Hudson Burnham, and actress Julia Marlowe; and letters of recommendation from sculptors Philip Martiny and Karl Bitter. Other papers include legal documents concerning the Yandell family estate and leases on property owned by Enid Yandell; personal papers such as receipts, prescriptions, poetry and music, and miscellaneous family items; printed material concerning Yandell's career and her social service during World War I; various typed material including lectures and speeches; newspaper clippings regarding Yandell and her work, particularly the Daniel Boone statue commissioned by members of the Filson Club and the Yandell family, and the lives and works of other sculptors and artists, social and political events of the day, and biographical and genealogical information on Enid and the Yandell family, respectively. Also included are rough sketches and watercolor paintings done by Yandell; instructional art books and reference material used; scrapbooks compiled by Yandell containing newspaper clippings, articles, etc., about her life, career, and work, in addition to those of other artists and sculptors; exhibition catalogs; price lists; collected art journals, some containing articles written by and about Yandell; information on the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897 and public sculpture in Providence, R.I.; and German and French architectural, ornamental, and free standing sculpture design data.

Letters from Mary Anderson, 1910-1940
Title:
Letters from Mary Anderson 1910-1940
Mary Anderson was an American actress who performed in both the United States and England in the 1870s and 1880s, retired from the stage in 1889, married, and spent the remaining fifty years of her life in England. Born in Sacramento, California in 1859, Mary Anderson grew up in Kentucky, where her family moved during her childhood, and was educated at the Ursuline Convent in Louisville. She was determined to become an actress from an early age, and at age 15 read for Charlotte Saunders Cushman, who suggested she train in New York. Mary Anderson made her stage debut as Juliet in a Louisville production of ROMEO & JULIET in 1875, toured the country, then made her New York debut in THE LADY OF LYONS (1877). After touring the United States for the next six years, she made her London debut in INGOMAR (1883). During the six years which followed Mary Anderson travelled between America and England, becoming renowned for her Shakespearean performances, especially as Rosalind, Hermione, and Perdita, and starring in several plays by W.S. Gilbert. In 1889 she suffered a nervous breakdown and permanently retired from the stage. In 1890 Mary Anderson married Antonio de Navarro, settled in Worcestershire, England, and worked on occasional literary projects, including a memoir, A FEW MEMORIES (1896), a play, THE GARDEN OF ALLAH (1911), which she co-authored with Robert Smythe Hichens, and a second volume of memoirs, A FEW MORE MEMORIES (1936). Mary Anderson de Navarro died in 1940 at the age of 81. The Mary Anderson papers consist of letters written by Mary Anderson, or on her behalf, between 1910 and 1940, mostly during the last eighteen years of that period, all of them addressed to Charles L. Wagner of New York City. Wagner, who was the manager of Irish tenor John McCormack, supplied Anderson with newspaper clippings and news updates on theatrical and musical doings in the U.S., and in return she wrote him about her friends and acquaintances, including George Bernard Shaw, Helen Hayes, John Gielgud, Cedric Hardwicke, the Charles Dickens family, Neville Chamberlain, and others. She also includes commentary on the American and European political situations, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, and U.S. Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy and his children. Several of the last letters, written when she was ill, were penned on Mary Anderson's behalf by family members or nurses.
