Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Ingersoll, Charles Jared, 1782-1862. Papers, 1803-1862.
Title:
Papers, 1803-1862.
There are letters to Ingersoll by many public men of the period, 1812-1847, on a wide range of national and foreign policy topics. Of these, some 300 are by Richard Rush, a close friend of Ingersoll. Almost one-half of the Rush letters were written while he was Comptroller of the U. S. Treasury, 1812-1814, and have to do especially with the War of 1812. The remainder were written while Rush was minister to Great Britain, 1817-1825, Secretary of the Treasury, 1825-1829, private citizen, 1829-1847, minister to France, 1848, and discuss domestic and international affairs, especially Anglo-American relations. Ingersoll correspondence also contains: letters, 1814-1837 by John Forsyth, a member of Congress, Minister to Spain, Governor of Georgia, and Secretary of State; letters, 1846-1848, from English author Sarah Mytton Maury concerning personal and political matters in the United States and England; and letters, 1814-1830, by James Monroe, principally pertaining to loans of money to Monroe. Several public figures are represented by five to ten letters each: John Quincy Adams, 1821, 1831-1832; John Binns, publisher of the Democratic Press, 1813, on the War of 1812 and the publication of political matters in newspapers; James Buchanan, 1838, 1839, 1843; James Burn, army officer, 1813, on military and naval action against the British forces; John C. Calhoun, 1816-1845; Thomas Abthorpe Cooper, actor, 1828-1833, on financial matters; William H. Crawford, while Secretary of the Treasury and private citizen, 1816-1831, on politics, American Indians, revenue, tariff, manufacturing, and banks; Peter Stephen Du Ponceau, authority on international law and practice, 1813-1814, on legal questions; Bolling Hall, Representative from Georgia, 1815-1830, on political matters; Edward Livingston, principally while he was Secretary of State, 1831-1833; James Kirke Paulding, naval officer and Secretary of the Navy, 1832-1841, on personal and naval matters; Joel R. Poinsett, Representative from South Carolina, Minister to Mexico, and Secretary of War, 1818-1840; and J. M. P. Serurier, French Minister to the United States, 1815-1834 on a wide range of personal and political topics. Other public figures, including five presidents, are represented by one to four letters. There are: letters, 1803-1846, by Ingersoll on politics, diplomacy, and economic and legal matters; Ingersoll's diary, February 1823; and manuscript notes by Ingersoll for projected work on "Slavery," "The Origins of the War with Mexico, 1846-1848," and a "History of the Territories of the United States." Also included are letters, 1814-1842, 1855, from Ingersoll's brother, Joseph Reed Ingersoll, Philadelphia lawyer and Congressman, mostly to Henry Dillworth Gilpin, U.S. Attorney General, on legal and political matters.

Title:
James Monroe letter to Rufus King [manuscript], 1813 January 1.
Monroe discusses the possibility of employing [Benjamin] Homans in the Dept. of War, noting that he had been introduced to him in Paris through a letter sent by Samuel Adams. He has forwarded a letter from Mrs. [Elbridge?] Gerry, notes that [Count Edward] DeCrillon was a scoundrel and has passed on recommendations for young men wishing to be in the Corps of Cadets. He concludes by noting that "I rejoice that the Freemen of the U. States have given unequivocal proof of their competence to self government, under circumstances of serious difficulty, by supporting in defence of their rights and honor, the attitude taken by their govt. against G. Britain."

Materials in this collection highlight the various business ventures of the Meredith family, documenting Jonathan Meredith's tannery (1772-1811), the overseas mercantile efforts of David Meredith who shipped goods between France and Philadelphia (1794-1797), and also the legal practices and political affiliations of both William (1772-1844) and William Morris Meredith (1799-1873). Tazewell family. Papers, 1756-1931.
Title:
Papers, 1756-1931.
The papers of Henry Tazewell (1753-1799) and Littleton Waller Tazewell (1774-1860) constitute the majority of the records in this collection. Though numerous receipts and vouchers are included, the extensive number and range of more important papers reflect the prominence of the Tazewell family in Virginia's history. The earliest Tazewell papers are chiefly wills and legal papers relating to land titles, many of them copies, but filed under the original date. From 1762-1799, letters are interspersed with legal documents and business papers relating to the Tazewell's of their clients. From 1800-1859, the papers are chiefly those of Littleton Waller Tazewell or his son, John Nivison Tazewell. Correspondence between members of the family illustrates the life of an upper class Virginia family of the period, with a great deal of information about the family plantations, letters from the son at school (Harvard, William & Mary, University of Virginia, & Princeton). The material also sheds some light on Norfolk history, and it has important papers reflecting national history in the 1820's and 1830's. The material from the 1860's deals chiefly with the career of Edmund Bradford, husband of Anne Elizabeth Tazewell, an officer in the Confederate Army. There are a few letters from Mrs. Bradford at Charlotte Court House, giving her impressions of the last days of the Civil War. Dated materials are arranged chronologically in boxes 1-19: box 1, 1650-1799; box 2, 1780-1788; box 3, 1789-1795; box 4, 1796-1801; box 5, 1802-1804; box 6, 1805-1811; box 7, 1812-1818; box 8, 1819-1821; box 9, 1822-1824; box 10, 1825; box 11, 1826; box 12, 1827-1829; box 13, 1830-1831; box 14, 1832-1834; box 15, 1835-1839; box 16, 1840-1843; box 17, 1844-1847; box 18, 1848-1863; box 19, 1864-1899. Undated materials (boxes 20-21) contains papers of Henry Tazewell related to his law practice and his senatorial career; there are a few papers which discuss the impeachment of William Blount. There are also legal and political papers of Littleton Tazewell, bills and receipts, undated maps of Virginia and South Carolina, clippings and printed materials. The volumes (boxes 20-21) contains 132 letters from Littleton Tazewell to his son, John Nivison, written 1821-1853; "Sketches of His Own Family," by Littleton; an index of letters received by family members and a letterbook, by John N. Tazewell; plantation account books and field notes of survey, by Littleton. The Floyd, Patton, Smith, Taylor, and Tucker letters (Acc. No. 23749) may be found in box 25. Wills and miscellany are in box 26. Oversize materials (2 boxes) contain indentures, land surveys, accounts, Littleton Tazewell's diploma from The College of William and Mary, and a photostat of Norfolk borough.
