Botanist and educator.
Epithet: American botanist
Botany professor. Dr. Charles Bessey was the first Professor of Botany at Iowa State University, beginning in 1870. He guided the Dept. during its formative years and established the first undergraduate botanical laboratory in the U.S., in which he introduced a compound microscope and other important apparatus. In 1882 he was elected Vice-President of the College and served as acting President in 1882. In 1884 he left Iowa State to become Dean and Head of the Dept. of Botany at the University of Nebraska.
Botanist, professor, and university administrator; chair of the Dept. of Botany (1884-1915), dean of the Industrial College (1884-1888 and 1895-1909), and acting chancellor (1888-1891 and 1899-1900) at the University of Nebraska; chair of the Dept. of Botany and Horticulture at Iowa Agricultural College, Ames (1870-1884); president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1910-1911)

The Botanical Seminar was originated in 1886 by seven students, including Roscoe Pound, J.G. Smith, J.R. Schofield, H.J. Webber and J.A. Williams. Between 1891-1899 a botanical survey of Nebraska was undertaken, and the Flora of Nebraska was published. Professor Charles E. Bessey provided guidance to the Seminar until his death in 1915. At that time, Professor Raymond J. Pool took over as director of the group. The Botanical Seminar went out of existence in the late 1930s

The collection consists of the personal papers of C.G. Lloyd, especially correspondence, botanical writings (primarily in published form), and financial records, both personal and for the various wildlife and nature preserves that he established. Also included are early records of the Lloyd Library and Museum. Of greatest significance are the series Mycological correspondence (containing correspondence to and from the leading mycologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries) and Photography (containing views of the Cincinnati area, including riverfront and views of the lives of lower class citizens, and travel views, especially of Samoa at the turn of the 20th century).

Darling, Harvey Ingham, Laurence C. Jones, Frank O. Lowden, G.W. Martin, Louis H. Pammel, and Gifford Pinchot. More correspondents include: Carl E. Seashore, Fred J. Seaver, Benjamin F. Shambaugh, Bertha M.H. Shambaugh, Bohumil Shimek, John Springer, and Robert B. Wylie. Macbride's work as botanist is reflected in items such as speeches and lectures he delivered, articles he wrote, notebooks he kept, and his Iowa Lakeside Laboratory research.
