Lloyd, C. G. (Curtis Gates), 1859-1927.

Hide Profile

Curtis Gates Lloyd was born in Florence, Kentucky, on July 17, 1859, to Nelson M. and Sophia Lloyd. A younger brother of chemist and pharmacist John Uri Lloyd, he joined John U. in Cincinnati. He work first as an apprentice, earning his certificate as a pharmacist, then as a wholesale drug salesman, and finally as bookkeeper and manager of Standard Publishing Co. In 1886, Curtis joined his brothers as a full partner in Lloyd Brothers Inc., a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Curtis had already accumulated a sizable herbarium and published an important work (Drugs and Medicines of North America) with brother J.U. Lloyd. In 1887, thanks to the largess of his two brothers, Curtis was freed from the daily business concerns, and devoted full attention to the study of mycology, becoming a leader in identification and systematics. To support his and John's research, he built a library of works in the fields of botany, pharmacy and materia medica. He published several mycological works and journals while building a large herbarium of fungi. Purchasing several wilderness tracts he established them as preserves. His legacy includes a world class library, the Lloyd Library and Museum, nature preserves, and a position as one of the leading early mycologists.
