Dowson, Ernest Christopher, 1867-1900. Autograph letter signed : London, to Arthur Moore, 1889 June 14.
Title:
Autograph letter signed : London, to Arthur Moore, 1889 June 14.
Referencing the rejection of their collaborative work "The Passion of Dr. Ludovicus" by the publisher Sampson Low, proposing that they consider trying to get it published in a magazine. Asking Moore to read Dowson's positive critique of Ibsen's "A Doll's House" in the forthcoming issue of The Critic, noting that "it is the only serious criticism, save that of "A White Lie" which I have ever attempted." Mentioning that in the current Pall Mall Gazette "the ruffian Buchanan is attacked in a most withering & delicious letter by one Shaw."

Smith, Ernest William. Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935).
Title:
Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935).
The Ernest Smith Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935), consist primarily of manuscripts, notes, photographs, correspondence, and memorabilia that reflect his career as a jounalist. The majority of the manuscripts suggest the possibile preparation of a second autobiography, tentatively entitled From Newsboy to War Correspondent: An Anecdotal Retrospect of Fifty Years of Newspaper Life. Also found here are several manuscripts and published versions of Smith's journalistic writings (1916-1930). The small body of correspondence, 1879-1931, relates to Smith's work as a journalist, as well as his editorial duties on the Revue des Revues (1890-1919), and as an editor and translator of works of Tolstoy and Rochefort. Significant correspondents include Sarah Bernhardt, Maxime Du Camp, Alexandre Dumas (fils), Kamel al-Husseini (Grand Mufti of Jerusalem), Henrik Ibsen, Maurice Maeterlinck, Helmut Graf von Moltke, Emile Ollivier, Ouida (Maria Louise Ramé), Henri Rochefort, Tatiana Sukhotina-Tolstaia, Alexandra Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy, and Jules Verne, among others. Among the personal papers are found materials that relate to Smith's work and travels as a journalist, especially memorabilia of the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1895), and the Boer War (1899-1902). These include early socialist/anarchist leaflets and newspapers, and photographs taken by Smith during the siege of Ladysmith (1899-1900). Also present are the souvenir booklet and photographic stills for the 1931 British International Pictures film, Dreyfus, for which Smith was an advisor.

Day, Clarence, 1874-1935. Papers of Clarence Day [manuscript], 1900-1925.
Title:
Papers of Clarence Day [manuscript], 1900-1925.
The collection contains over 60 letters from Day to Mary Lyon whose writing Day encourages. He offers story ideas, improvements on the plots and other criticism, and suggests publishers. He discusses his rheumatism, his depression, massage therapy and sessions with his psychotherapist David Seabury, but seldom mentions his own writing. Many of his letters are illustrated with humorous sketches. In addition there is a letter from Lyon to Day annotated by Lyon, a letter from Louise Godfrey Irwin rejecting a Lyon story, a postal card to Franklin Spier conveying four drawings, the manuscript of "Sonnets in a garden" by Mary Lord, an untitled manuscript on a crescograph by Day, and a photograph of Day. The remainder of the collection consists of the correspondence of Day protogé Arthur Johnson, a Boston writer whose short stories Day attempted to market. There are letters to Day and Johnson from editors of several magazines, accepting, rejecting and suggesting changes to various stories. With these are two letters from Day to Johnson including one discussing Ibsen and doubting his own ability.

Typescript and notes for The Avante-garde Woman, ca.1957
Title:
Typescript and notes for The Avante-garde Woman ca.1957
Minda Lothar, author of RAGE OF JOY: THE DIVINE SARAH BERNHARDT (1968), a novel based on the life of actress Sarah Bernhardt, also wrote a paper analyzing what she termed the Avante-garde Woman personality type, primarily drawing upon women associated with the theater as her models for discussion. The typescript and notes for Minda Lothar's The Avante-garde Woman consist of 12 folders, each containing one section of the work. Textual evidence suggests that Lothar wrote this paper in 1957, but it appears never to have been published. The first chapter features analysis of the Avant-garde type as represented by fictional women, such as Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, Henrik Ibsen's Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler, Arthur Wing Pinero's Paula Tanqueray, and Tennessee Williams' Blanche Du Bois. In the second chapter, Lothar discusses real life actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt, Eleanora Duse, Gertrude Lawrence, and Tallulah Bankhead, as well as the French novelist George Sand. In the third and final chapter, Lothar examines the different ways these women dealt with the challenges each faced in their lives. Also included is an outline for the paper.

Alexander, Jane, 1939-. Jane Alexander collection, 1967-2003 bulk 1980-1999.
Title:
Jane Alexander collection, 1967-2003 bulk 1980-1999.
Collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, professional material, photographs, printed material, and other items. Correspondence in the collection includes items relating to her acting career as well as several letters regarding her tenure as head of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), including letters from Jane Fonda, Sally Kellerman, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Claiborne Pell, Edward Kennedy, Ed Asner, James Earl Jones, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Robert Redford, Charlton Heston, Janet Reno, Al Gore, Sandra Day O'Connor, Robert Byrd, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Jesse Helms, and Kay Bailey Hutchison. The bulk of the correspondence (1990-2000), consists of letters regarding NEA matters. Professional material in this collection primarily consists of files relating to the NEA's work to further awareness of the arts and work with the government to fund artistic endeavors. The NEA's budget was targeted for elimination by Congressional Republicans during this period, using the pretext that NEA funds were supporting obscenity; this controversy is reflected in Alexander's papers. Present are numerous letters, minutes of meetings, itineraries, clippings, endowment statements, congressional records from legislative sessions, transcripts of speeches, court records, and various memos, all dating from the 1990s. Most of these documents are photocopies. The collection contains several dozen photos from Alexander's career and personal life. Printed material in the collection includes film and play posters, reviews, and programs for different productions. Other items in the collection include several award certificates presented to Alexander, artists' renderings of the actress, and several audio recordings of interviews and talks.

Title:
Papers of Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen [manuscript], 1867-1895.
The collection contains four poems and sonnets by Boyesen, correspondence with admirers, publishers, other authors and friends, and a photograph. The centerpiece of the collection is a group of 13 letters in German by author Friedrich Spielhagen of Berlin, known to Boyesen from his years in Germany. The friends help one another with the translation and publication of their literary output in either America or Germany and discuss a wide variety of subjects and problems, particularly political, social, and health. Other correspondence includes two letters from Louise d'Alq, a French translator, regarding Boyesen's "Gunnar" and the possibility of future translations, and two letters from Archbiship Michael Augustine Corrigan concerning charges of Tammany Hall connections made and retracted by Boyesen. Specific topics in the correspondence include thoughts on evolution, travels to Russia, the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, Goethe, realism and naturalism in literature particularly in the works of Ibsen and Zola, and Spielhagen's friendship with Carl Schurz. In addition there are 45 letters and fragments in Norwegian.

Elizabeth Robins Papers, 1803-1963
Title:
Elizabeth Robins Papers 1803-1963
Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952) was an actress, playwright, prolific novelist and suffragist. American born and educated, Robins spent most of her adult life living and working in England, first in London and later in London and Sussex. The nearly one hundred linear feet of materials which comprise the Elizabeth Robins Papers reflect the many facets of Robins' life. The collection includes diaries, photographs, scrapbooks and ephemera, as well as correspondence with a variety of dynamic personalities, and is a resource not only for studying her life and works, but for examining a wide range of family, social, and political issues. The collection provides insight into American and English theater in the late 19th century, English literary circles, and the women's suffrage and feminist movements in England and America, as well as information on gold mining camps in post Civil War Colorado and turn of the century Alaska. Largely because of her long term friendship with Dr. Octavia Wilberforce, there is information on the movement for improved health care for women and children. The correspondence of Raymond Robins, Elizabeth Robins' brother, adds another dimension to the collection. His letters are an excellent source for the study of Chicago political history, the Settlement House Movement, and Progressive Party politics.
