The papers of painter Abraham Walkowitz date from 1904-1969, and measure 2.9 linear feet. Found within the papers are biographical material; letters from artists, friends, and art collectors; business records; four interview transcripts; notes and writings; exhibition announcements, catalogs, and other printed material; and photographs of Walkowitz, friends, colleagues, and artworks.Biographical material consists of autobiographical notes, a citizenship certificate, membership and registration cards, medical records, and address books.Letters, with scattered responses from Walkowitz, are primarily from colleagues including artists John Taylor Arms, George Biddle, Paula Eliasoph, Ivan G. Olinsky, Walter Pach, Alfred Stieglitz, Carl Van Vechten, and Max Weber, Boston art collector Louis Schapiro, publisher E. Haldeman-Julius, writer Horace Traubel, and dancers Elizabeth Duncan and Maria-Theresa Duncan, the sister and adopted daughter of Isadora Duncan respectively. Individual letters are primarily from the diverse group of notable people to whom Walkowitz had sent copies of his books. Also found are letters from art organizations and museums. Business records consist of documents concerning the will of art collector George M. Dunaif, letters of acknowledgement of gifts of art work donated by Walkowitz to various museums, and miscellaneous financial material. Transcripts are of three interviews with Walkowitz and an interview with Walkowitz and Frank Kleinholz. Notes and writings include lists of names, addresses, and art work, miscellaneous lecture notes, and writings by Walkowitz and by others. Printed material consists of clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, reproductions of art work, and books by Walkowitz, and by Walkowitz and E. Haldeman-Julius. The photographs series contains the most significant material in the collection. The majority of photographs are of Abraham Walkowitz, taken by many notable photographers including Arnold Genthe, Lotte Jacobi, Arnold Newman, Alfredo Valente, Carl Van Vechten, and Clarence White. Also found are photographs of friends and colleagues, as well as photographs of art work by Walkowitz and others.

Earl Browder Papers, 1879-1990

Title: Earl Browder Papers 1879-1990

Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Collection incluces correspondence/subject files (1879-1970) relating to Marxist philosophy, the workings of the C.P.U.S.A., Browder's role within the Party and to Browder's business ventures as well as legal files (1938-1958); manuscripts (1924-1967) of Browder and others, including Browder's manuscripts for articles, books, memoranda, news releases, pamphlets, reports, and speeches; and memorabilia including personal files and photographs of Browder and his family, and some colleagues. Renger-Patzsch, Albert. Albert Renger-Patzsch papers, 1890-1980 (bulk 1924-1966).

The archive documents Renger-Patzsch's professional life, especially his work on book projects and commissions for industrial firms. It also includes technical details of his photographic workshop, and provides insight into his artistic views on photography as an independent art form, and on the aesthetic trends in photography in economically prosperous post-war Germany. Of particular interest are his views on the increasingly dominant role of commercial and color photography in the public media. The main portion of the archive (7 linear ft.) consists of post-war correspondence; a relatively small part (0.5 linear ft. or ca. 250 items) dates from the time before the war. Set apart is the predominantly business-related correspondence of Renger-Patzsch's widow Agnes and his son Ernst, mostly dealing with the administration of Renger-Patzsch's estate, and family correspondence of Renger-Patzsch, mainly letters from his mother Frieda. Two separate groups of correspondence are organized by topic. The archive includes ca. 30 mss. drafts of mostly unpublished lectures and articles by Renger-Patzsch. Ephemeral publications, newspaper clippings and offprints (ca. 1 linear ft.) provide information about the scope and reception of Renger-Patzsch's photographic work before and after the war, his work on book projects, exhibitions, and other professional activities. Also included are personal documents, such as certificates and diplomas, of Renger-Patzsch and his family, a few portrait photographs taken by his daughter Sabine, poems by two unidentified authors, and business-related and personal bills and receipts (0.5 linear ft.). A distinct part of the archive consists of drafts of texts about Renger-Patzsch by other authors, drafts of introductions to his books, and miscellaneous writings, pre- and postwar, including an annotated typescript by Theodor Riewerts titled "Ein Maler und ein Photograph", nine texts by the ecologist Hugo Hertwig, a draft for the book "Wegweisung der Technik" by Rudolf Schwarz, and a treatment for a movie by an unknown author.

This collection consists of 36 black and white portraits, most of well-known American and European men and women, taken in Berlin and the U.S. Jacobi signed some of the photos and etched her signature into the negatives of others. All of the photographs are matted and some are framed. Few of the photos have more than the subject's name and Jacobi's name and address (which may help researchers date the prints) on the back. Dates and other information were added to the photo list by the processor, based on information in the book Lotte Jacobi.
