The Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.) was organized at the church's General Conference of 1830. The members met for the first time in Macon, Georgia, in 1831. Within a few years the church began to struggle with the issue of slavery. Unable to reach an agreement, the church divided in 1844 and the slave-holding states formed the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.,S.).
In 1866 the Georgia Conference of the M.E.C.,S. was divided into the North Georgia and South Georgia Conferences. After much debate the conference voted for a dividing line that ran generally east and west and slightly north of Macon. The division put nearly two-thirds of the state in the South Georgia Conference and approximately two-thirds of the members in the North Georgia Conference. At the time of its creation the North Georgia Conference consisted of a total of roughly 540 churches with a combined lay membership of 38,000 and 390 clergy. It included the districts of Augusta, Athens, Atlanta, Elberton, Dahlonega, Griffin, La Grange, Milledgeville, and Rome.
The North Georgia Conference grew rapidly. In 1939 the MECS united with the MEC and the Methodist Protestant Church to form the Methodist Church. At this time the Conference consisted of ten districts, 289 charges, 377 clergy, 156,000 members, and churches and parsonages valued at $8,232,995. The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1968 to become the United Methodist Church. In 1996 the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church consisted of twelve districts with a total lay membership of 286,515 and 877 clergy.
The experience of African Americans within the Methodist Church was one of segregation. They were organized into conferences separate from those of white members. In 1864 the General Conference of the MEC authorized the creation of Mission Conferences to serve people of color. Five mission conferences were formed between 1866 and 1868, including the Georgia Mission Conference in 1867. By 1868 these conferences had been granted the same status as the regional annual conferences. The Savannah Conference was formed in 1876, with the Atlanta Conference added in 1896. By 1895 these conferences had become almost exclusively African American in membership, numbering nineteen by 1925. At the time of unification in 1939, all the segregated conferences within the Methodist Church were organized into the Central Jurisdictional Conference, a racial, rather than geographical conference. This conference existed simultaneously with the five regional jurisdictional conferences. The Savannah and Atlanta Conferences united in 1952 to create the Georgia Conference. In 1964 the General Conference of the Methodist Church passed a plan to integrate the Central Jurisdictional Conference into the five regional jurisdictions. These merged from 1964 to 1973, with the Georgia Conference uniting with the North Georgia Conference in 1971 and the South Georgia Conference in 1972.
The North Georgia Conference supports a wide variety of services and institutions. The Wesleyan Christian Advocate is a weekly newspaper supported by the North and South Georgia Conferences. The United Methodist Children's Home, located in Decatur, was established in 1871. The conference supports several institutions of higher learning: Emory University, originally established at Oxford in 1836; La Grange College, which began as a female academy in 1831; Reinhardt College, formerly a junior college founded in 1883; and Young Harris College, a junior college, opened in 1882. The church supports Wesley Foundations at nine other colleges and universities in the North Georgia area. In addition to these institutions the North Georgia Conference has developed Camp Glisson, a summer camp and year-round retreat facility in Dahlonega, and Simpson Conference and Retreat Center in Norcross. United Methodist retirement centers include Wesley Woods Retirement Center in Atlanta and Wesley Village in Blairsville.

Faulkner, Daphne C., 1930-. Daphne C. Faulkner papers, 1974-1981; 1986; 1995.
Title:
Daphne C. Faulkner papers, 1974-1981; 1986; 1995.
This collection documents Faulkner's participation and activities in ERA-related organizations through letters, manuscripts, meeting minutes, a filmstrip, printed items and lists. Arrangement is by organization and event name (ERA Georgia, Inc.; People of Faith for the ERA in Georgia; United Methodist Church; and a White House Briefing on the ERA) followed by miscellaneous letters and writings of and by Faulkner. The ERA Georgia Inc. materials, 1976-1980, include proposed Georgia Code changes for the 1977 legislative session, a copy of the U.S. House of Representatives' 1978 resolution to extend the ERA ratification deadline, and 1980 meeting minutes and nominating committee information. People of Faith for the ERA in Georgia materials include form letters, programs, and invitations to events, rallies and religious services they sponsored (including a 1981 appearance by Mormon feminist Sonia Johnson), clippings pertaining to Johnson and to Helen Douberly (treasurer of People of Faith), circa 1979 membership forms, and educational materials (including the 1976 filmstrip What's All This About An ERA?). Faulkner's activities, 1975-1981, with the United Methodist Church as a member of both the United Methodist Women and Church Women United are documented through correspondence, an Equal Rights Amendment Coordinator job description, and Faulkner's notes, program, follow-up letters and handouts from the 1980 South Atlantic States Workshop on the ERA held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Also included are signed statements, 1980, of ERA support from retired deaconesses, missionaries, and staff of the Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville, North Carolina. The material from the February 12, 1980 White House Briefing on the ERA consists of correspondence and printed material issued by the Carter Administration, as well as miscellaneous educational material (1977-1980) which was distributed. The latter group contains undated (possibly published) printed items on "Hispanic Americans and the ERA" by Wilma Espinosa, and "Women in the Military" (unsigned). The 1980 letters and a related clipping were sent to Faulkner from Georgia legislators regarding the ERA. Writings by Faulkner include letters, speeches and introductions, and autobiographical pieces written circa 1979-1986 about the ERA and women's issues. Letters and notes, 1995, from Faulkner to Jeff Jones and from Betty Dean (former secretary to People of Faith) to Faulkner pertain to the items Faulkner was giving to Jones which became the basis for this collection.

Title:
United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference district records, 1869-2000.
This collection consists of records created by various organizations that existed on the district level of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as the preceding denominations, the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.), the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C., S.), and the Methodist Church. The majority of the collection consists of charge conference records maintained at the district level, with the bulk dating from 1960 to 1990. Additional material includes account ledgers, committee reports, correspondence, general office files, loose photographs and albums, and scrapbooks. The activities of women within the church are documented in this collection by the records of the Woman's Home Missionary Society and the Woman's Missionary Society, as well as the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The records of the Oxford (1875-1931), South Atlanta (1878-1931), and North Atlanta (1924-1936) district level organizations of these societies contain information about foreign and domestic missionary work and the temperance movement. Of interest are the contents of the miscellaneous folder (1894-1931), which contains material concerning missions to Malay and the island of Sumatra, which is now part of the Republic of Indonesia. Researchers should be aware that district boundaries changed over time. Often a file contained records for an overlapping time period for a single church or charge. These records were not separated into different files. Instead, the records were filed with the newer district. Researchers are therefore advised look for records in both the former and current districts.

Series 2 contains research materials generated by Richardson, primarily notes from interviews with individuals on their involvement with Camp Glisson, conducted in the mid-1990s. The miscellaneous files in Series 3 include information on grounds fees (1965-1968) and loans (1951-1955) related to the camp. The bulk of the collection consists of photographic images. For preservation reasons, negatives are stored separately from photographic prints. Series 4 contains over 1800 photographs from Camp Glisson. Many of these photographs are unidentified. The majority are group photographs of Glisson campers. Negatives, which are stored separately from the photographic prints for preservation reasons, are found in series 5. Series 6 contains color slides of Camp Glisson people and events from the 1960s through the 1990s.

United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference. United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference administrative files, 1707-1989.
Title:
United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference administrative files, 1707-1989.
This collection consists of a variety of records created at the conference level of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as the preceding denominations, the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.), the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.,S.), and the Methodist Church. They are arranged by the type of activities that generated the records and then chronologically. The majority of the Annual Conference (1923-1989) and the national General Conference (1883-1980) records consist of handbooks, programs, and handouts, in addition to correspondence regarding meeting arrangements. Information about ministerial qualifications, appointments, and disciplinary action is included in the Clergy series (1707-1976). Of interest to the researcher are the accusations of financial mismanagement made against the Rev. J. S. Stewart, who was at one time treasurer of the Board of Missions of the North Georgia Conference. Both the Board of Stewards (1790-1847) and Financial (1881-1974) series contain information on conference accounts. The Treasurer's record book within the latter series are from the Georgia Conference of the Central Jurisdiction, covering the years before its integration with the North Georgia Conference. The Board of Trustees minutes within the Property (1951-1960) series deal mainly with the Wesley Memorial building.

Harris, Pierce. Pierce Harris papers, 1908-1969.
Title:
Pierce Harris papers, 1908-1969.
This collection of Pierce Harris's papers is comprised mainly of 45 typed sermons (1956-1957) delivered at First Methodist Church in Atlanta, First Methodist Church Bulletins, and several scrapbooks. The scrapbooks primarily contain clippings of Harris's column in the Atlanta Journal. The scrapbooks have been chronologically arranged, but there is some overlap among the volumes. The earliest scrapbooks contain items dating back to the time of World War II and contain material relevant to that episode in history. Also in the collection are several of Harris's writings, including typescript rough drafts of his unpublished book With Blind Disregard, which was to be an expansion of a series of columns he wrote for the Atlanta Journal in February and March of 1951, the typescript rough drafts of which are also in the collection. The published columns are contained in Scrapbook 8. In addition, the collection contains correspondence, telegrams, church bulletins, and photographs. Of note among the correspondence is a personal letter written by J. Edgar Hoover to Harris (1964 Mar. 4). The collection also includes items that were removed from a scrapbook that appears to have been complied by Madge Harris Henderson, Pierce Harris's daughter.

Title:
Joel Duncan McDavid papers, 1980-1984.
The Joel McDavid papers consist of correspondence and official papers relating to the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980-1984. The papers are divided into two series. Series 1 contains the correspondence between the Bishop, District Superintendents, and Pastors within the districts of the conference. The folders are arranged alphabetically by district and the letters chronologically within the folders. Series 2 contains subject files from the office of Bishop McDavid. All efforts have been made to preserve the original folder titles from these office files. Series 2 is divided into six subseries. Subseries 2.1 contains correspondence and other material relating to the annual meetings of the North Georgia Conference in 1981, 1982 and 1983. Subseries 2.2 concerns plans for the construction of a Methodist retreat and conference center at Simpsonwood between 1981 and 1984. Subseries 2.3 contains the files of the various committees of the North Georgia Conference from 1980-1984, arranged alphabetically. Subseries 2.4 includes the financial files of the Conference, also arranged alphabetically. Subseries 2.5 contains invitations and correspondence relating to the Bishop's speaking engagements from 1980 to 1981, arranged chronologically. Finally, Subseries 2.6 includes miscellaneous subject files of the North Georgia Conference, arranged alphabetically.

United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference local church histories, 1788-2002.
This collection consists of reports, histories, photographs, and bulletins from churches in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church (U.S.). These histories were maintained by the Conference for each church for which members contributed information. Although the depth of information varies for each church, some of the material includes dates the church was founded, founding members, pastors, membership lists, location of the church, and other pertinent data. Many of the histories were prepared by members for church homecomings and anniverseries.

Title:
United Methodist Church (U.S.) North Georgia Conference board and agency records, 1830-1983.
This collection contains the records of several boards and agencies of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as the preceding denominations, the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.), the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C., S.), and the Methodist Church. In each case the organization existed for the purpose of overseeing specific areas of work for the entire conference. Activities prominently featured in this collection include benevolent aid, community outreach, and missionary work. Several agencies assisted pastors and their families in time of need. Most notable within the collection are the Bishop's Fund, the Fund of Special Relief, and the Preacher's Aid Society, whose activities are recorded for the years 1830 to 1943 through their financial and administrative records. Among the various outreach programs, the Sunday School Society contains the most material. The societies' work for the period 1852 to 1930 is established in a variety of records. Considerably less material is available for the Council on Ministries and Asbury Hills Home for the Aged, Inc., the majority of which is financial, and ranges from 1968 to 1979. Missionary work for the period 1830 to 1951 is well documented within the collection, with the exception of a gap from 1866 to 1889. This may be due to chaos following the Civil War or that these records did not survive. The activities of women within the conference are known through the records of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society and the Woman's Missionary Society for the period 1878 to 1931 and 1937. Additional subjects of interest in the series include the United Methodist Children's Home, conference legal transactions from 1841 to 1908, the merger with the Central Jurisdictional Conference, temperance activities for the years 1964 to 1965, and politics and current events in the Atlanta area from 1898 to 1904.

Smith, John Owen, 1902-. John Owen Smith papers, 1921-1996.
Title:
John Owen Smith papers, 1921-1996.
The papers of John Owen Smith document his years as a B.D. student at Yale Divinity School, his pastoral appointments in South Carolina, and his time as Bishop of the Atlanta area of the Methodist Church (later the United Methodist Church). The collection includes correspondence, subject files, sermons, and notebooks from all phases of Smith's career. Smith presided over the Atlanta area during one of the most tumultuous phases of his church's history. In 1968 the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The terms of the merger required that the Central Jurisdiction (which consisted entirely of black churches) be abolished, and that all annual conferences be integrated. Smith's files, particularly his correspondence, illustrate the strong leadership he provided during the merger of the black Georgia Conference with the historically white North and South Georgia Conferences. Also of note are Smith's correspondence files regarding the 1972 General Conference of the United Methodist Church, which was held in Atlanta.

Title:
Georgia United Methodist Pastors' School records, 1956-1987.
This collection consists of Board of Managers minutes, correspondence, promotional materials, financial records and evaluative information regarding the Pastors' School. The bulk of the information focuses on the Pastors' school during the 1970's. Much of the correspondence is in reference to past and upcoming faculty at the school. The promotional materials are brochures and newsletters sent to pastors in the Georgia conferences. Financial records cover the years from 1975 to 1987. The evaluative information consists of a questionnaire summary, the registrar's reports for 1964 to 1972, and a pre-registration report. In addition to these blocks of records, there are also miscellaneous records such as a constitution and by-laws, faculty invitations, schedule, and information on the office of the Dean. There is a history of the school as well as short biographies of faculty who have participated in the school. Also of note is the 1968 Joint resolution to the 1968 session of the Georgia, North Georgia, and South Georgia Annual Conferences.
