James Lloyd Knox, retired bishop of the United Methodist Church, was born in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Florida Southern College in 1951 and went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology. He and his wife, Edith, served as missionaries to Cuba and Argentina from 1958-1964. The Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.) was organized at the church's General Conference of 1830. The members met for the first time in Macon, Georgia, in 1831.
