Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

Autograph letter signed from Edmond Malone, Sunning Hill, to George Steevens, London [manuscript], 1777 October 5.
Asks if Steevens has printed his preface yet. Malone is unsure as to whether he will ever under take Beaumont and Fletcher and therefore requests that Steevens expurge whatever relates to those authors.

Collection contains typescripts, publications, photographs, and other materials including correspondence and newspaper clippings gathered by Daniel Morley McKeithan. McKeithan wrote primarily about Paul Hamilton hayne, and his papers contain numerous published articles on Hayne, correspondence about locating Hayne manuscripts and uncollected poems, a few copies of Hayne documents, and two photographs and negatives of "Copse Hill," the cottage near Augusta, GA, where Hayne lived from 1866-1886 (the photographs were taken in 1940). He also wrote articles and reviews on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, and Edgar Allan Poe. The collection includes a student paper entitled "Self-repetition in Hawthorne's stories and novels" (71 pp. holograph probably prepared while a student at the College of Charleston). A carbon type-script of McKeithan's thesis (M.A.), entitled "The origin and development of the Athurian legend," is also included in the collection (100 pp.). His 1935 dissertation (Ph. D.) presented to the University of Texas, entitled "The debt to Shakespeare in the Beaumont-and-Fletcher plays, " was privately printed in 1938--a copy can be found in the collection.

Autograph letters signed and initialled from George Steevens, Hampstead Heath and elsewhere, to various people [manuscript], 1766-[1799?].
Some letters undated. Correspondents: David Garrick, [William] Herbert, [Michael] Lort, Edmond Malone, Thomas Percy, Isaac Reed, [Paul? Vaillant], R.B. Sheridan and possibly another. Also, Steevens' notes on Beaumont and Fletcher; and Malone's advertisement for an edition of The plays of Shakspeare, embellished by Charlton Nesbit after Mr. Thurston, December 1804. The letters discuss points of literary interest; many concern Steevens' collaboration with Malone and Reed in the editing of Shakespeare's plays. In a letter to Garrick [1771?], (2), Steevens mentions Garrick's current altering of Hamlet. In another to Malone, May 9, 1782, (24), he refers to a small, full-length picture of Shakspeare, a pretended original. In two letters to Percy, 1797, (41 and 43), he notes prices fetched by the old quartos of Shakspeare. Several letters refer to Chatterton and Goldsmith. Correspondents and item numbers: David Garrick (1-4); [William] Herbert (5-9), [Michael Lort (10-12), Edmond Malone (13-37), Thomas Percy (38-44), Isaac Reed (15-48), [Paul? Vaillant] (49), R.B. Scott indicates that, while he has considered Beaumont and Fletcher a great deal, he cannot think of interfering with Gilchrist's edition. Thanks him for a pamphlet on the Jonsonian controversy, yet he fears "there was some discension between him and Shakespeare." Year of letter based on postmark.

[Commonplace book], [late 19th century].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of verse extracts and miscellaneous facts, on primarily secular subjects. The first 8 pages contain single-stanza excerpts of poems, including those of William Aytoun's Blind Old Milton, William Collins' How Sleep the Brave, and Francis Beaumont's Knight of the Burning Pestle, as well as ditties on sewing, drinking, and war. The remainder of the volume is devoted to brief notes, anecdotes, and quotations on an idiosyncratic collection of subjects, arranged alphabetically. Under "Name," for example, the author writes, "Malherbe wrote Maleherbe, Malherble, Malerbe, Malherbe, de Malherbe"; under "oil," he notes, "A charm to still the waves. Erasmus' Colloquies."

Prompter's copy. The text bears most resemblance to the editions of 1776. There is an added scene between Margarett and Cacafogo. The Biographia dramatica, 1812, vol. III, p. 231, quotes a letter of Garrick's of 1776, disowning any connection with the alterations.
