Letters, diary transcripts, and research notes pertaining to the 1869 Cook-Folsom expedition into Yellowstone National Park were gathered or created by Chesnut during his employment at Bozeman, Mont., and Washington, D.C. In 1904, Chesnut met Charles W. Cook, an elderly farmer living in White Sulphur Springs, Mont. Cook, along with David E. Folsom and William Peterson, had explored the Yellowstone National Park region in 1869 and recorded their journey in a joint "diary" which had appeared in edited form several times during the intervening years. Cook gave Chesnut his original ms. version of the diary from which Chesnut prepared a typed transcript. The typed transcript was then submitted by Chesnut to David E. Folsom for his correction. In 1921, Chesnut was contacted by Oscar Mueller, a son-in-law of Charles Cook requesting the return of the original ms. version. Chesnut no longer had the original but provided a copy of the transcript then in his possession. The Chesnut papers include the 1904 transcript of the Cook-Folsom expedition diary prepared by Chesnut and corrected by David E. Folsom; letters written in 1921 and 1922 from Oscar Mueller, Horace Albright, and Stephen Mather all pertaining to the diary or to a planned appearance of Charles Cook at a celebration at Yellowstone National Park; and a copy of the 1894 publication of the expedition diary as edited by Nathaniel Langford and corrected by David E. Folsom.

The diary of Henry D. Hauser describes his train and stage trip (beginning on 12 May 1865) from St. Louis, Mo., to Virginia City, Montana Territory, via Atchison, Kan., Denver, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah. After reaching Virginia City on 18 June 1865 Hauser describes his work for N.P. Langford looking at claims, writing deeds, and collecting money; social activities including billiards and dancing; business associations with Judge Hezekiah Hosmer and Walter B. Dance; area robberies and hangings; etc. The regular diary entries end on 21 Dec. 1865. Following that date there are scattered entries for 1866 and 1867. The diary also contains accounts of expenses during Hauser's trips and while living in Virginia City, and notes concerning rivers and Indian tribes in Montana Territory.

Typed copies (bound volume) of Bullard's reminiscences, a diary, and letters, compiled by her sister, Marjorie Bullard Kohlsaat (Marjorie L. Bullard). The reminiscences (undated) and diary (1897) describe childhood, family, and school life in St. Paul (Minn.), 1884-1908, including home furnishings, household management, and children's daily routines. Letters (1908-1911), as well as the reminiscences, describe her work as a teacher in Eveleth (St. Louis County, Minn.), life on the Mesabi Iron Range, and the Finnish immigrants of the area. The reminiscences give a vivid account of life in St. Paul (Minnesota) in the 1880s-1900s. The Bullard family moved from Illinois to St. Paul in 1884, living first in the area of John and Grove streets, then in St. Anthony Park, and finally moving to Irvine Park. Complete descriptions are given of the neighborhoods, the interior furnishings of homes, and the people who lived in the neighborhoods. An account is given of Polly Bullard's first days in the Murray School, St. Anthony Park. Six letters (1908-1911) written by Polly Bullard to her mother tell of Polly's experiences as a school teacher in Eveleth, Minnesota. These letters give an excellent description of life on the "frontier" area of the Iron Range. She tells of living conditions, social life, and her experiences teaching the children, many of whom were foreign born. She mentions the strong socialistic element among the Finnish people. Very excellent descriptions are given of Duluth, and also of the geographic features of the Range, and the miners' homes. Polly Bullard's diary of 1897 gives a fairly complete account of the activities of a young girl in St. Paul. She gives much data on social life, clubs, schools, friends, and also a brief discussion of family genealogy. The diary also gives a good description of musical events in St. Paul. A foreword, written by Marjorie Bullard Kohlsaat (Mrs. Ernest W.), is concerned with family genealogy and a description of the family's activities before they came to St. Paul.

The Maginnis Incoming Correspondence Transcriptions consist of typed transcripts prepared by, or under the supervision of, Merrill G. Burlingame. The letters are a selection of incoming correspondence at Maginnis' Washington D. C. office from 1874 to 1878. The letters are from a wide variety of Montana territorial residents and locations, dealing with topics such as Indian affairs, territorial and national politics, government contracts and contractors, Yellowstone National Park, patronage requests, railroads, and land surveys. The transcriptions were taken from original letters presently held by the Montana Historical Society in their collection number 50. This set should not be considered a complete representation of those found in the Maginnis collection at the Montana Historical Society.
