Henry D. Hauser diary, 1865-1869.

The diary of Henry D. Hauser describes his train and stage trip (beginning on 12 May 1865) from St. Louis, Mo., to Virginia City, Montana Territory, via Atchison, Kan., Denver, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah. After reaching Virginia City on 18 June 1865 Hauser describes his work for N.P. Langford looking at claims, writing deeds, and collecting money; social activities including billiards and dancing; business associations with Judge Hezekiah Hosmer and Walter B. Dance; area robberies and hangings; etc. The regular diary entries end on 21 Dec. 1865. Following that date there are scattered entries for 1866 and 1867. The diary also contains accounts of expenses during Hauser's trips and while living in Virginia City, and notes concerning rivers and Indian tribes in Montana Territory.

Nathanial Pitt Langford was born in Westmoreland, New York, in 1832; he came to St. Paul in 1854. He was cashier in the banking house of Marshall and Company in 1855, and in 1858 he became cashier of the Bank of the State of Minnesota. Henry Dixon Hauser was born in 1838 in Falmouth, Pendleton County, Kentucky, to Samuel Thomas Hauser and Mary A. Kenneth Hauser. He received his education in business, and moved to Montana in 1865.
