Montana State College. Dept. of Agricultural Economics. Research project records, 1911-1963.
Title:
Research project records, 1911-1963.
The project records are an extensive set of files which document the activities of various personnel in surveying and interpreting agricultural development in Montana. While some of the material may have been used by Wilson in preparing his 1923 publication, specifically those in Series 32, "Successful Farms," most of these research projects took place afterwards. The subjects of the various projects include rural housing, financing, dairy operations, rural electrification, meat trade, irrigation, and taxation. Investigators include Richard J. McConnen, Pius Weisgerber, Clive Harston , Laurence O. Baker, Jack R. Davidson, Roy E. Huffman, D.C. Myrick, Glenn H. Craig , Charles W. Loomer, M.E. Quenemoen, M.H. Title:
Agricultural Economics Department records, 1912-1949.
Series 1-5 concern the papers and correspondence of E.L. Currier and M.L. Wilson, followed by those of each of the department heads through 1949. These records are concerned with the overall administration of the department, but the files do not follow any alpha-numeric order within each box. Series 6 and Series 7 are the files of individual members of the department faculty or the extension service, with subdivisions based on individual name or staff position held. Series 8 concerns the origin, operation, and reports pertaining to the Fairway Farms Corporation and its individual farms. The numerous subdivisions in this series pertain to functional or individual farm topics. The last identified series consists of a miscellaneous batch of files retrieved from a closet in M.L. Wilson's office and are mostly, but not entirely, concerned with the Fairway Farms Corporation.

Title:
Richard T. Ely papers, 1812-1963 (bulk 1882-1939)
Papers, dating mainly 1882-1939, of Richard Ely, an economist, educator, reformer, and faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Wisconsin, and Northwestern University. Also included are genealogical information and records of several academic, patriotic, and reform organizations which Ely helped found, including the American Association for Agricultural Legislation, American Bureau of Industrial Research, Christian Social Union, Ely Economic Foundation, Institute for Economic Research, Institute for Research in Land Economics and Public Utilities, League to Enforce Peace-Wisconsin Branch, and Wisconsin Loyalty Legion. During his long career Ely made numerous contributions to American life and also had significant contacts in Europe and in Japan. As a social scientist and an educator he was greatly influenced by the German higher education system. In this country he pioneered the seminar method of graduate education, was a founder of the American Economic Association, a frequent lecturer at Chautauqua, and a symbol of academic freedom. He established the areas of labor economics, labor history, agricultural economics, conservation, real estate, and land economics as fields of academic interest. Ely corresponded with hundreds of individuals including many prominent in the social sciences and education, in the field of business, and in Wisconsin political, educational, and business circles. A prolific author and editor, Ely had frequent contacts with publishers and editors, especially those at the Macmillan Company. Ely is also widely recognized as a key figure in the development of the reform ideology which characterized the Progressive Era. He had many contacts with prominent political, reform, religious, labor, and socialist leaders. Ely received and wrote thousands of letters during his career; selected correspondents are noted in the subject headings below and a correspondent index was compiled for inclusion in the microfilm edition. Additions received in 1991 consist primarily of family correspondence and miscellaneous professional papers.

Title:
University of Connecticut, President's Office Records [Albert N. Jorgensen, 1935-1962] undated, 1935-1962.
When Connecticut State College became the University of Connecticut in 1939, the new laws and By-laws stated that, “the President of the University is the executive and administrative officer of the Board [of Trustees]. In this capacity he is responsible for the operations of the University and is given authority requisite to that end.” This is the mandate under which President Jorgensen worked throughout his long service as President of the University. The President was also designated as “chairman of the University Senate and of the several schools and colleges.” ” The administrative reorganization authorized by President Jorgensen for the University in 1939 placed direct responsibility for the schools and colleges. President Jorgensen was thus able to devote all his energies chiefly to the fulfillment of his plans for the overall development of the University.
