Charmian Kittredge was born in Southern California and educated at home, developing excellent secretarial skills. A free spirit and devoted traveller, she married Jack London in 1905. The two shared an adventurous life of travel until London's death in 1916. Charmian wrote fiction, travel books, and biography, including the two-volume Book of Jack London. She was an intriguing personality in her own light, and a devoted promoter of Jack London's works.

Walling, Anna Strunsky, 1879-1964. Anna Strunsky Walling papers, 1880-1968 (inclusive).
Title:
Anna Strunsky Walling papers, 1880-1968 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, memorabilia and photographs. The correspondence (1897-1964) which includes family, friends and political associates documents Walling's involvement in political causes. The letters also reveal Anna Walling's feelings on personal matters, social questions and her reactions to meetings with prominent persons both in the United States and abroad. Her trip to Russia (ca. 1905-1907) with William English Walling where they toured the provinces and met many literary and political figures is described in her letters home. Important personal correspondents are Melville Anderson, Gelette Burgess, Harry Cowell, Hutchins Hapgood, Ray Nash, Charles Edward Russell, Katherine Maryson, Jane Roulson, James Graham Phelps Stokes, Rose Pastor Stokes, Upton Sinclair and Gaylord Wilshire. There are also a number of letters from prominent political and literary figures of the period, among them Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Zona Gale, Arnold Genthe, Jesse Jackson, Vida Scudder, Irving Stone, Henrietta Szold, Norman Thomas and Rabindranath Tagore. Despite her prolonged love affair with Jack London only a few copies of his letters are in the correspondence, (She gave many of his letters, manuscripts, etc. to the Huntington Library.). Also in the papers is correspondence of her husband, William English Walling, her sister, Rose Strunsky Lorwin, the Walling children, Leonard Abbott, her companion for twenty years, after the death of her husband, and the correspondence of Willoughby and Rosalind Walling, parents of William English Walling. Important among William English Walling's correspondents are Hutchins Hapgood, Selig Perlman, George Creel and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Much of the family correspondence reveals the vicissitudes of a wealthy family trying to manage on a steadily diminishing income. Other difficulties in the Walling marriage are also frankly discussed. Anna Strunsky Walling's extensive diaries and idea books (1901-1964) span her adult life and chronicle not only events but also contain long passages of reflection and emotional expression on her marriage and children. Her writings in the papers contain articles, chapters from two novels (one unpublished), and two unpublished memoirs on Jack London. Also included are research files, a collection of postcards from her trips abroad and in the United States, family photographs and photographs documenting her trip to Russia, ca. 1905-1907.

Title:
Papers of Jennie Cook Davis, 1885-1992 (bulk 1917-1942)
The collection is semi-catalogued and arranged alphabetically by author. The collection contains 60 manuscripts, three of which are oversized. Most of the manuscripts are poems written by Jennie Cook Davis. Most of these poems were written for publication and were inspired by everyday occurrences or newsworthy people. The collection also contains a draft of Davis's autobiography and a copy of a biography written by Karen Neset Smith in 1995. The collection contains 130 pieces of correspondence, two of which are oversized. The letters mainly consist of originals and copies of letters from Jennie Cook Davis to her eldest daughter, Winifred Davis McDowell in the later years of her life. The letters of greatest interest are the four from Jack London discussing literary matters and from Charmian London regarding Jack London's death. There are also five letters from Charles Fletcher Lummis and one from his wife Eve. Other artists local to Southern California wrote to Jennie Cook Davis including John Burroughs, Maynard Dixon and John Steven McGroarty. The ephemera collection consists of a few pieces that relate to Jennie Cook Davis's life and many examples of her sketches. Also, her scrapbook contains more samples of her poetry and newspaper articles. The file labeled "Ephemera: Miscellaneous" consists of: a 1887 Official List Officers, Agents, and Stations for the Wisconsin Central Line; four brochures for Devore, Calif. [1915]; and a Camp Cajon "Souvinir [sic] Program" dated July 4, 1919. The photographs of Jack and Charmian London are pictures taken of watercolor reproductions made by Donald McDowell in the 1980s and 1990s. The collection does not contain actual photographs of Jack or Charmian London. In all, the ephemera totals 166 pieces. Other participants include: Carl Ethan Akeley, Lou Westcott Beck, R. D. Blackmore, William Bristol, Harry Chandler, Schuyler Colfax, Eugene Field, William Hard, Ludwig Katterfield, Eve Lummis, Alfred Payne, Allan Pinkerton, Eddie Rickenbacker and George Francis Train.

Marshall Bond papers, 1869-1976
Title:
Marshall Bond papers 1869-1976
The papers document the life, work, and adventures of Marshall Bond between 1897 and 1935, and also include a few papers of his father, Hiram G. Bond, and his son, Marshall Bond, Jr. Bond's Klondike experience is well documented by his diary from 1897-98, letters to his family, draft chapters of a memoir about his experiences, and photographs. The photographs include one of the dog who inspired Jack London's novel The Call of the Wild; several of the Bond family's California home, on which London based the setting for the beginning of the novel; and forty-five commercially produced photos of the Klondike region and Dawson by E. A. Hegg and other photographers. The bulk of the collection is correspondence, which includes Bond's letters to his family from the Klondike, from Goldfield, Nevada in 1904, from Mexican villages under attack by Pancho Villa in 1918, and from hunting trips in Alaska in 1911 and Africa in 1927. It also includes his incoming and outgoing correspondence with business associates and friends, which documents mining ventures and other matters, including a plan to settle Boer refugees in Mexico. Bond's letters to Herbert H. White report intelligence about Germans in the American Southwest during World War I. The correspondence includes one letter from Jack London to Marshall Bond, in which London confirms that the character "Buck" was indeed based on the Bonds' dog, and Judge Miller's house in the novel on Judge Bond's house in Santa Clara. The collection also includes photographs taken in 1926 of surviving associates of Billy the Kid, a few World War I letters from the front, copies of newspaper articles by Bond, maps of the Yukon Territory, and a typescript of a book by Marshall Bond, Jr.

Title:
Papers of Joan London, 1899-1975 (bulk 1937-1970).
The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera pertaining to the life and work of Joan London. Since much of London's work focused on her father, many items in the collection specifically relate to the life and writings of Jack London. The collection contains correspondence between Joan and individuals who knew, or were interested in, her father, the notes and drafts used by London in writing her father's biography, and several copies of letters written by Jack London himself. Joan was also interested in the life of her paternal grandfather, William Henry Chaney, and the collection contains both manuscripts and notes relating to him. Joan London's unpublished work, Visiting rights only, is one of several manuscripts in the collection, and it specifically addresses Joan's feelings towards her father and her thoughts on her childhood within a single-parent family.
