Charles Ranlett Flint (1850-1934) was a financial capitalist, merchant and industrial consolidator. He entered the shipping business and worked for commission merchants in New York City. Popularly known as the "Father of Trusts", he was responsible for many industrial consolidations and mergers. Collection consists of correspondence, agreements, memoranda, minutes, commercial codes, financial statements, securities accounts, and patent and shipping papers which reflect Flint's multifarious and far-flung business activities in America, South America, Russia, and China. Included are papers relating to industrial mergers; rubber goods manufacturing on Long Island (N.Y.); the financing of the United States Rubber Company; the purchase and re-organization of the New York Times Company; the paving of the streets of Manaus, Brazil; a new submarine engine; proposals for railways between Guayaquil and Quito in Ecuador and between Alaska and Siberia; the supplying of munitions and cartridge belts to the Russian army; and the provision of loans to Russia and to China for railway development and to the Sultan of Turkey for the purchase of naval vessels. Also, correspondence of Flint as chairman of the American Committee for the Encouragement of Democratic Government in Russia. Personal miscellaneous papers include his receipts while travelling abroad, personal press clippings, photographs, and printed matter.

Three handwritten journals describing O'Brien's life, from childhood to age 80, comprise this collection. O'Brien, born in Ireland and sent to London for school, ran away to sea. The bulk of the three journals describe his life as Captain of steamers in Alaska. He worked for the Alaska Steamship Co. as early as 1895. He was Captain of the "Victoria" on the Seattle to Nome run and had the reputation of being the 1st ship into Nome after the ice went out.

The Otto Harbach Papers include correspondence, business papers, scripts, scores, lyrics, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter documenting his personal life and career, and also a particular period in the American musical theater, from ca. 1908-1938, when Harbach created most of his works. Correspondence is mainly between Harbach and his family in Salt Lake City, and later with his son William. Family members include his brothers, Arthur, James, Julius, and William Hauerbach, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Avern Poulton. Included in the small amount of correspondence from friends and colleagues are several interesting letters from Arthur Hammerstein, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Carl Sandburg. The collection is particularly strong in covering the business aspects of Harbach's work, documented with contracts, copyright, and royalty information. Scripts form the largest series and include copies of most of Harbach's works. The scores are mostly for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT (music by Jerome Kern) and COUNTER MELODY (music by Peter De Rose) and are notable for the holographs that make up part of the scores for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT. There is also a good collection of photographs, including family, colleagues, ASCAP events, friends, and a selection of production photos. Personal papers include genealogical information, writings other than scripts, ephemera and a long oral history interview conducted by William Harbach shortly before his father's death.

The Paul Muni papers span the years 1920 through 1967 and consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, personal papers and writings documenting his career as an actor of stage and screen. The correspondence contains letters from many notables of the day and often discuss Muni's political and professional opinions. Correspondents include: Maxwell Anderson, Sherwood Anderson, Rex Beach, Noel Coward, Albert Einstein, Lion Feuchtwanger, John Golden, Arthur Hopkins, Helen Morgan, Dick Powell, Billy Rose and Blanche Yurka. Personal papers contain many programs and personal photographs as well as a notebook written by Muni in Hebrew or Yiddish and a sketch of him by Staats Cotsworth. Scrapbooks in the collection are primarily clippings with reviews and articles about Muni and his roles in plays and movies. However three of the scrapbooks document trips taken by him and his wife to Paris, Vienna and Israel. Other items of note include autographed photographs from friends and a photograph of Muni with Amelia Earhart on the set of The WOMAN I LOVE.

The ms. clearly details the life and show business career of Dorothy Stone Collins's father, Fred A. Stone (1873-1959), an internationally known entertainer, from his early years in several Kansas towns until 1938 when he celebrated in New York City his 50th year in the theater. He performed in circuses, variety shows, vaudeville, musical comedy, The Jayhawkers & other films, and dramas. Stone was also active in theatrical union organizations such as the White Rats of America, Actors' Equity Association, and National Vaudeville Artists. His career is documented chronologically, and details are included about productions in which he performed. His hobbies included sports and traveling with his brother-in-law, author Rex Beach, for big game hunting. His closest friends included his partner, Dave Montgomery, and Will Rogers. This ms. contains a wealth of information on the entertainment world of 1883-1938 and life at the turn of the 19th-20th century. Fred Stone's daughters Dorothy Stone Collins, Paula, & Carol and wife Allene Crater are mentioned as are James J. Corbett and the Kansas cities of Kansas City, Topeka, & Wellington. Includes poetry by George Ade, reminiscences by Stone & Beach, and newspaper articles by Rogers. The last 20 years of his life are not covered by this work.

Robert Hobart Davis (1869-1942) was an American journalist, editor, dramatist, and photographer. He was editor of Munsey's Magazine from 1904 to 1925, columnist for the New York Sun from 1925 to 1942, and honorary president of the Stevenson Society of America. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, printed matter, and photographs documenting Davis's career as an editor and writer and his hobby of photography. Letters reflect his personal as well as professional interests. Correspondents include editors, dramatists, illustrators, journalists, artists, and public figures. Writings contain typescripts and printed versions of works by Davis and a file of printed reviews of his books. Title: Alexander McKenzie family papers, 1889-1945.

Papers consist of correspondence to Elva A. McKenzie (1856-1922) from Alexander McKenzie (1851-1922), miscellaneous correspondence to Alexander, Elva, Jeannette (1888-1979), Alexander Jr. and Thomas McKenzie, financial material, legal documents, newspaper clippings, photographs and several artifacts. Artifacts were offered to the Museums Division in September 2011. The collection consists of Elva McKenzie's personal effects, which were acquired by her daughter Jeannette, upon her death in 1922. Some of Jeannette's personal correspondence dating after her mothers' death is also in the collection. Personal material of Alexander McKenzie was likely left in the family home in Yonkers after one of his visits, and added to Elva's belongings in the family collection. The book The Spoilers by Rex Beach (1905) was added to the collection from the State Archives publications. The gold mining scandal at Nome, AK, was the basis for the novel, which Beach witnessed firsthand. The villain Alec McNamara in the novel is based on Alexander McKenzie.

Big Little Books and Better Little Books published, 1933-1943, by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, and books of similar format published, 1934-1941, by the Saalfield Publishing Company, Engel-van Wiseman and Rand McNally. Charles G. Wright is Professor Emeritus of Entomology at North Carolina State University. Big Little Books were inexpensive children's books about 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" in size. They were first published in 1932 by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin. There was a captioned picture opposite each page of text. Most of them were based on radio, comic strips, or motion pictures. Other publishing companies which produced similar books were Dell, Engel-van Wiseman, Fawcett, Goldsmith, Lynn, Ottenheimer, Saalfield, Waldman, and World Syndicate.

Ellis Parker Butler was an American author best known for his story "Pigs is Pigs" (1905). During his lifetime he wrote 30 books and more than 2,000 stories and essays.
