Epithet: French politician
French revolutionary; President of the National Convention; instrumental figure in the Reign of Terror.
French Revolutionist.

Title:
General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Two printed articles by J. G. Rosengarten, General Comte de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau (both published in 1895), bound together in an extra-illustrated volume, with a title page reading: General Count de Rochambeau and The Chateau de Rochambeau (Philadelphia: G. L. Fitzgerald & Co., 1895). The volume contains an original letter from Charles J. Stillé (dated 28 December 1892); 51 print portraits; 4 other illustrations (2 depictions of the surrender at Yorktown in 1781; a view on the Hudson; and the State House in Philadelphia in 1778); and 3 regional maps (Philadelphia; Baltimore; and New York). Most of the items, including the leaves of the articles, are inlaid. The first article is from the American Historical Register (vol. 3, no. 14, October 1895, p. [195]-208, with a different portrait substituted on the first page); and the second is a reprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (vol. 33, no. 146, January 16, 1895, p. 353-361). Stillé's letter concerns Rosengarten's translation from Max von Eelking (The German allied troops in the North American war of independence). Of the portraits, 5 are of Rochambeau; 5 of George Washington; 3 of Charles Cornwallis; 2 of François comte de Grasse; 2 of Charles Gravier Vergennes; 2 of Charles de Houx de Vioménil; and one each of 33 other individuals. The portrait of Marie Joseph Paul Lafayette is in color. The portrait of Étienne Maurice Gérard was evidently included in error, in connection with a mistaken reference in The Château de Rochambeau to the French minister in Philadelphia in 1782 as Mr. Gérard (p. 357); the minister at that time was Anne-César, chevalier de La Luzerne, who succeeded Conrad Alexandre Gérard in the post in 1779. The volume has a typed index of illustrations at the front. The spine covering is wanting, and covers detached.

Robespierre, Maximilien, 1758-1794. French revolutionary pamphlets, 1792-1928.
Title:
French revolutionary pamphlets, 1792-1928.
Nineteen of the documents in this collection were written by revolutionary leaders on topics pertaining to the business of the National Convention or the Committee of Public Safety. The publications are titled as reports to the National Convention, discourses (speeches), extracts, and exposés. They discuss topics such as foreign political relations, moral and philosophical foundations for the Republican Government, possible conspiracies against the Convention, and the problems associated with criminal activities in Paris. They were published between 1793 and 1801 and most are dated using the Revolutionary Calendar. There are three pamphlets written by Robespierre and the authors of other pamphlets include: Barère; Saint-Just; Billard-Varenne; Brissot; the Duke of Orleans; and, Louvet. The remaining twelve documents were published between 1857 and 1928 and concern events of French Revolution or are biographies of its leading figures. Here, information about Marat, Danton, Charlotte Corday, and Charlotte Robespierre is presented. Some documents were not fully cut and must be unfolded to view.

Augeard, Jacques-Mathieu, 1731-1805. Jacques-Mathieu Augeard epic poem "Zerbin and Isabelle," 1795 May 20-1797 Aug 6.
Title:
Jacques-Mathieu Augeard epic poem "Zerbin and Isabelle," 1795 May 20-1797 Aug 6.
Collection comprises an annotated manuscript (373 pgs.) for Augeard's "Zerbin et Isabelle poeme." The epic poem is divided into 15 sections (songs) containing a total of 11,000 verses, and includes a preface, introduction, and epilogue, although these do not appear in their traditional order within the manuscript. Augeard wrote the piece clandestinely and displayed his intimate knowlege of the French royal court. Although the characters and events in the poem and notes are fictional, they are closely linked to the Revolution and those with power or popularity in France at the time, including Robespierre, Adélaïde de Bourbon, Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, Talleyrand, and Madame Geoffrin, among others. The plot revolves around a meeting between Zerbin, a Scottish prince, and Isabelle, the daughter of the French King, and includes battles, intrigues, criticisms of the royal family, and love affairs. Later, Augeard inserted bookmarks into the manuscript to point to characters or key sections of the narrative. Augeard also proposed future revisions (back of p.2).

Temple, William Johnston, 1739-1796. Letters: to Sir William Johnston Temple, 1763-1794.
Title:
Letters: to Sir William Johnston Temple, 1763-1794.
Manuscripts, in two hands, of 65 letters addressed to William Johnston Temple, primarily from his friend Norton Nicholls and his wife, Anne (Stow) Temple, though the collection also includes several letters from "J. Clarke" as well as one from his mother and father; one from Edward Charles Dilly; and one from Anne Temple to her aunt. Nicholls' letters discuss university life; his social activities with Thomas Gray; and descriptions of Temple's publications and of his own travels through England, Europe, and Scotland and visits to friends. In 1770, he relays Gray's answer to Temple's antiquarian query. He also mentions current events, discussing a session of the House of Lords and the Rockingham administration in 1770; being in the Army; speculating about an impending war based on the treaty between France and America in 1778; deploring the savagery of the Jacobins in 1792; and discussing Robespierre and the English military in 1794. He also frequently mentions his reading, praising Richardson's Clarissa but pronouncing Madame de Sevigne tedious, and mentioning Horace Walpole's poor opinion of a "fumbling antiquarian." In vol. 1, dated 1763, are two letters from Nicholls describing his visit to Walpole at Strawberry Hill, where he takes special note of the throngs of visitors to the estate and describes the view. The letters from Temple's wife focus primarily on domestic and personal matters; she expresses her loneliness and disappointment at being apart from him; complains about her ill health; describes the difficulties of raising children as well as their daily activities; and instructs him to purchase various items for them, including linens, ribbons, and toys. Occasionally she also mentions correspondence with the family of James Boswell. Two letters from vol. 1 are housed separately under LWL Mss File 10.
