Family papers of the Coles family, including letters to Catherine Coles Payne from Walter Coles, Eliza Gerry Townsend and Elbridge Gerry, Jr. two account books of Baldwin M. Payne (d. 1866) and a sales book of his estate. The letters to Catherine Coles discuss various aspects of the War of 1812 (military operations and war diplomacy, campaigns in Upper Canada and Vermont, especially Lake Champlain and the battle of Isle-aux-Noix, operations against smugglers, desertions, rumors about a mutiny among Indians, news about a German regiment that had deserted from the Prevost's army to join the American side, and British blockade of the Boston harbor); social and political life in Boston in 1813-1825, (including the celebration of the inauguration of John Quincy Adams, the gubernatorial campaign of 1825, plans for the monument of the battle at Bunker Hill and new market in Boston), and literary news, including discussion of the latest novels of James Fenimore Cooper and Sir Walter Scott. The book of "Accounts of advancements" kept by Baldwin M. Payne in 1849-1866 includes entries listing Negro slaves. Also included is business correspondence of Henry Clark (b. 1792), son of Bowling Clark and Elizabeth Cheadle, an agent and commission merchant in Lynchburg, Va.. In 1817-1825, he was engaged in tobacco trade and also acted of behalf of various brokerage firms and attorneys. The correspondence consists of letters from commission agents in Liverpool, London, and Richmond, Va. The letters of British brockers contain news of the situation on European markets.

Title: Papers of Edward Davis Townsend, 1761-1928 (bulk 1837-1879).

Personal and professional papers of Edward Davis Townsend. Included are official and private correspondence, (chiefly letters addressed to him), military records, journals, memoirs, and a few photographs. Two journals cover the 2nd Seminole War in 1837-1838, and his service in California from 1851 to 1856. The latter was incorporated in a memoir entitled "A Trip to California;" both accounts are accompanied by pencil sketches. An unfinished memoir covers Townsend's life and career until the beginning of the Mexican War. The collection also contains a group of personal and political correspondence of Elbridge Gerry, including pieces related to his diplomatic and political career (1772-1814), and the correspondence of Ann Thompson Gerry and Eliza Gerry Townsend.

Written during the period when Gerry was a member of the U.S. Representatives, he speaks of social calls and of political matters. He says of Madison: " ... he expressed his mind more freely on politics than he ever did to me before & went so far as to acknowledge that the administration of this constitution is carried to an extreme that he never expected: particularly in fiscal matters. he is very much alarmed at a report on manufactures which is directed to incorporate a company with exclusive privileges and also at the large amount of property under the control of the Secretary of the Treasury ..."

Written to his wife back in Cambridge, MA from the Federal Convention in Philadelphia, Gerry says: "I am distressed my dear girl exceedingly, at the information ... of your indisposition, and shall prepare myself to leave this city on the arrival of the next post unless you are better. Indeed I would not remain here two hours, was I not under a necessity of staying to prevent my colleagues from saying that I broke up the representation, and that they were averse to an arbitrary system of government ... I think it probably that the Convention will rise in ten days ..."

Written as a delegate to the Federal Convention in Philadelphia, Gerry refers to his Will which Alexander Hamilton was drawing up for him. At the Convention Gerry was very much ill at ease as he missed being away from his new family back in Cambridge. Ultimately he voted against the new Constitution. He writes: "I am as sick of being here as You can conceive. Most of the time I am at Home or in the convention. I do not think in a Week I am ten hours anywhere else. We meet now at ten & sit till four; but entre nous, I do not expect to give my voice to the measures ..."

Title: James Monroe letter to Rufus King [manuscript], 1813 January 1.

Monroe discusses the possibility of employing [Benjamin] Homans in the Dept. of War, noting that he had been introduced to him in Paris through a letter sent by Samuel Adams. He has forwarded a letter from Mrs. [Elbridge?] Gerry, notes that [Count Edward] DeCrillon was a scoundrel and has passed on recommendations for young men wishing to be in the Corps of Cadets. He concludes by noting that "I rejoice that the Freemen of the U. States have given unequivocal proof of their competence to self government, under circumstances of serious difficulty, by supporting in defence of their rights and honor, the attitude taken by their govt. against G. Britain."

Written while attending the Federal Convention in Philadelphia, Gerry writes a letter contrasting the social life of Philadelphia with that of New York. This is a very personal letter in which Gerry expresses his love for his wife and his philosophy of love.
