Papers of the Gerry and Coles families, 1783-1825 (bulk 1812-1825).

Family papers of the Coles family, including letters to Catherine Coles Payne from Walter Coles, Eliza Gerry Townsend and Elbridge Gerry, Jr. two account books of Baldwin M. Payne (d. 1866) and a sales book of his estate. The letters to Catherine Coles discuss various aspects of the War of 1812 (military operations and war diplomacy, campaigns in Upper Canada and Vermont, especially Lake Champlain and the battle of Isle-aux-Noix, operations against smugglers, desertions, rumors about a mutiny among Indians, news about a German regiment that had deserted from the Prevost's army to join the American side, and British blockade of the Boston harbor); social and political life in Boston in 1813-1825, (including the celebration of the inauguration of John Quincy Adams, the gubernatorial campaign of 1825, plans for the monument of the battle at Bunker Hill and new market in Boston), and literary news, including discussion of the latest novels of James Fenimore Cooper and Sir Walter Scott. The book of "Accounts of advancements" kept by Baldwin M. Payne in 1849-1866 includes entries listing Negro slaves. Also included is business correspondence of Henry Clark (b. 1792), son of Bowling Clark and Elizabeth Cheadle, an agent and commission merchant in Lynchburg, Va.. In 1817-1825, he was engaged in tobacco trade and also acted of behalf of various brokerage firms and attorneys. The correspondence consists of letters from commission agents in Liverpool, London, and Richmond, Va. The letters of British brockers contain news of the situation on European markets.
