José Angel Gutierrez, Reies Lopez Tijerina, Rudolfo "Corky" Gonzales (L-R) In El Paso, Texas at the first National Convention of La Raza Unida Party, 1972. Part of Part of Reies Tijerina Pictorial Collection, PICT 000-654-0001-0149 (Box 1, Folder 2).
Chicano land grant activist Reies Lopez Tijerina was born September 21, 1926 in Poth, Texas, to migrant workers Antonio and Erlinda Lopez Tijerina. Tijerina enrolled in the Latin American Bible School in Saspamco, Texas in 1944. He left the seminary in 1946 to pursue religious self-discovery.
1949-1950, Tijerina spent much time in the southwest and Mexico researching land grants. He relocated his family to New Mexico in 1957, continuing his land grant research. On February 2, 1963, La Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Alliance of Land Grants) was founded, largely through Tijerina's efforts. La Alianza quickly became a radical organization. Occupation of the Echo Amphitheater campground near Abiquiu, and the June 1967 armed raid on the Rio Arriba County courthouse brought national attention and intense scrutiny to La Alianza, destabilizing its membership and significantly weakening its influence upon Hispanos in New Mexico. Tijerina, facing criminal charges relating to the courthouse raid, traveled to Washington D.C. in June 1968 to head the Mexican-American contingent at the Poor People's March. He also formed his own political party, the People's Constitutional Party, and attempted to run for governor of New Mexico, but was found ineligible.
Convicted on charges of criminal assault of a federal officer and the destruction of federal property, Tijerina served time in federal prison. Released in 1971, he was ordered to sever his association with the already weakened Alianza as part of a parole agreement. He incorporated the Institute for the Research and Study of Justice (IRSJ), a non-profit group that sought to research and study all aspects of justice. In 1983, he relocated his family to Coyote, New Mexico, where he began to focus on international issues such as millennialism, nuclear armament, the Holocaust, and Middle Eastern issues, especially the Palestinian and Israeli conflict.
Trials and tribulations from La Alianza days weighed heavily on Tijerina's family life. Two failed marriages and an arson fire in 1994 which destroyed Tijerina's Coyote home and extensive library were part of the price tag for his activism. By 1995, Tijerina relocated to Michoacan, Mexico, where he continues to speak out on indigenous land issues and a variety of international issues.

Steiner, Stan. Papers, ca. 1961-1987.
Title:
Papers, ca. 1961-1987.
The Steiner Papers include the personal and professional papers of Stan Steiner covering the time period from 1940 - 1987 and occupy 69 linear feet. They document the personal and intellectual activities of a writer, a social historian, a moralist, a folklorist, an anecdotalist, and a myth-teller. His writingsrsome twenty books and countless articlesdare a continuing search for vanishing cultures and the histories of forgotten people, specifically of the American West. To that end, Steiner wrote about Native Americans, the Chinese who helped build the West, Mexican Americans, New Mexico and New Mexicans, ranchers, farmers, cowboys, and Islanders. His goal was to disabuse his readers of stereotypes and misinformed images of the West by telling the complicated, nuanced, and elemental stories of these people in their own words, what Steiner called "testimonials." His manuscripts provide multiple draft copies of many of these testimonies as well as typed manuscripts and photostats of typed drafts and published works by Steiner.

Montoya Chavez, Gloria. Gloria Montoya Chavez papers, 1967-1991.
Title:
Gloria Montoya Chavez papers, 1967-1991.
The Gloria Montoya Chavez Papers contain articles, clippings, classroom materials, correspondence, subject files, photographic materials, and video recordings. The material documents Chavez's activist role in the Chicano Movement, as well as her career as an administrator. The bulk of this collection concerns UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services. The collection is arranged in three series: Personal Papers includes some biographical information, certificates of appreciation, letters of support, records of travels in Mexico and general correspondence. Activism and Community Involvement is comprised largely of press clippings of various race/ethnic political concerns, such as police brutality, the Albuquerque Riot, the Poor People's Campaign, the Chamizal Treaty, Reies Lopez Tijerina, and civil rights movements in general. Original materials (non-press clippings) include a collection of statements regarding charges of police brutality at Stacey's Supper Club in Ranchitos, New Mexico (27 August 1971). There are also statements regarding the Pete Garcia trial in Silver City, New Mexico, including a book of notes taken at the trial (author unknown). Garcia was on trial for the March 1969 shooting death of Bernalillo County Sheriff's Sergeant Julian Narvaez. After three jury trials, Garcia was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1971 and fled to Mexico. Gloria Montoya Chavez's participation in Jesse Jackson's New Mexico Rainbow Coalition is also represented in this series. University of New Mexico Materials is divided into 2 subseries: Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services, and Other UNM Materials. The Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services, subseries contains administrative and special event programming materials, as well as a photo collection (including slides) documenting UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services. These photos show students, staff, faculty, and some notable celebrities associated with Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services events, such as Reies Lopez Tijerina, Edward James Olmos, and Jesse Jackson. Slides document University of New Mexico events and performances, activities of the Brown Berets in Denver and the Albuquerque South Valley, anti-WIPP demonstrations in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Teatro Campesino. A video collection for the documentary "Searching," which was developed under Gloria Montoya Chavez's direction, provides a visual documentary history of ethnic and women's studies at UNM, from 1965 to 1985. This video collection also documents the history of UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services. Other UNM Materials include notes and minutes from the UNM Presidential Advisement Committee, the UNM Staff Committee, and the UNM Ethnic and Women's Coalitions. Some pedagogical materials are included, in particular related to Chicano/a and Native American students. These materials incorporate counseling and training manuals, articles and bilingual education documents.
