Nabokov worked on the Navajo, Sioux, and Crow reservations in 1962. He was a reporter for the Santa Fe New Mexican from 1967-1968. Nabokov has held many teaching positions, including instructor in American Indian Studies at Peninsula College, Monterey, Ca. in the 1970s, instructor at University of California, Berkeley from 1979-1982 and 1984-1985, co-instructor at the Native American Educational Services College, Chicago in 1987, lecturer at University of California, Santa Cruz, 1987-88. Other lecturer positions include the Center for the Study of Indian History, Haskell Indian Junior College, University of California, Santa Barbara, College of the Virgin Islands, Colorado College, University of North Dakota, University of Montana, and University of Colorado. Nabokov has received numerous awards and honors, as well as research fellowships.

Nabokov is professor of American Indian Studies and World Arts and Cultures at UCLA. He has worked on the Navajo, Sioux, and Crow reservations in 1962. He was a reporter for the Santa Fe New Mexican from 1967-1968.
