Lederberg, Joshua. Joshua Lederberg papers, 1904-2008.
Title:
Joshua Lederberg papers, 1904-2008.
Correspondence, reports, research material, published writings, photographs, committee meeting minutes, and audiovisual material document the research and public service of Joshua Lederberg, 1958 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine "for his discoveries concerning genetic recombination and the organization of the genetic material of bacteria". From the start of his career, Lederberg retained his records in a rudimentary organizational arrangement, with the hope they would be preserved for posterity. Many of the series and sub-series are interconnected. Correspondents and information about the many organizations Lederberg was involved with reappear throughout the collection. There is a large amount of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature; however, the collection does not contain a significant amount of biographical resources, such as correspondence between family members. Series IV: Research, Genetics sub-series contains Lederberg's original lab notebooks and class notes from his time at Yale University and his short stay at Columbia University as a graduate student. There are reprints, notes and correspondence in Series V: Writing, Published Writings (P Files) sub-series which pertain to Lederberg²s research results from his time at the Tatum lab. There are also unpublished manuscripts, in the Unpublished Manuscripts (Q Files) sub-series, prepared in collaboration with his first wife, Esther Lederberg, describing further experiments with E. coli. While at Stanford, Lederberg bedgan his involvement in private and government organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Academy of Sciences, President's (Kennedy) Panel on Mental Retardation, U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and the Center for the Advanced Study of Behavioral Science (CASBS) surpassed his research activities. Records from many of these organizations appear throughout the collection notably in Series II: Academic Career, Series III: Correspondence, Series IV: Research, and Series V: Writing. Series VI: Public Service is the main source of information on these activities. Lederberg developed his interest in space exploration in the late 1950s and early 1960s in reaction to the Soviet launch of the Sputnik satellite. He wanted to increase the scientific influence on this new field and prevent the politicization of space exploration. He served on many NASA committees and his interest would lead to the development of exobiology as a scientific discipline. The Exobiology sub-series in Series IV: Research documents this subject through correspondence, reports, articles, and meeting minutes. Computer science was another new discipline to interest Lederberg and while at Stanford he helped develop the SUMEX (Stanford University Medical Experimental) and DENDRAL (Dendritic Algorithm) database systems. Further explanation of the databases and Lederberg's involvement in their development can be found in Series IV: Research, Computer Science sub-series. The series includes drafts, correspondence, reports, grant applications, and manuals. In the mid-1960s he wrote a weekly scientific series in the Washington Post in which he commented on political and social concerns from a scientific perspective. The series known as Science and Man ran from 1966 to 1971. A complete run of the articles can be found in the Science and Man (SAM Files) sub-series in Series V: Writing. In addition to the original articles there are drafts, correspondence, and research material.

Milislav Demerec Papers, 1919-1966
Title:
Milislav Demerec Papers 1919-1966
The geneticist Milislav Demerec emigrated from Yugloslavia in 1919, spending nearly his entire career in the Department of Genetics at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Working initially on the genetics of maize and later on , his research interests included radiation and chemical mutagenesis, and during the Second World War, penicillin and the genetics of antibiotic resistance. Curt Stern Papers, 1907-1981
Title:
Curt Stern Papers 1907-1981
The Papers of Curt Stern include extensive correspondence, lectures (1920s-1970s, 1.5 boxes), autobiographical material, articles, zoological course notes, photographs, etc. Stern's various areas of scientific interest are documented in the collection: the chromosome theory of heredity, role of gene mutation and chromosome rearrangements in evolution, action and interaction of genes during individual development, and particularly his contribution to the development of human genetics as a discipline (centered on his popular and influential book, 1949, 1960, 1973). Both his career in Germany and the United States is documented in his correspondence. After studying with T. H. Morgan at Columbia University on a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship (1924-1926), Stern returned to Richard Goldschmidt's lab at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute (1926-1932). There is material of note in the collection concerning this period when Stern helped to establish the cytological basis of crossing over. After a short stay at the California Institute of Technology in 1932, Stern's temporary residence in the U. S. became permanent, and his later career at the University of Rochester, 1933-1947 (Chairman, Department of Zoology) and at the University of California, Berkeley, 1947-1970 (there is abundant material on the Department of Zoology) is covered in the collection. There is other material on: American Association for the Advancement of Science Inter-Society Committee on Science Foundation Legislation, 1946-1947; American Society of Human Genetics (Pres., 1957); Atomic Energy Commission (Advisory Committee for Biology and Medicine, 1950-1955); Genetics (journal); Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Advisory Committee for Biology, 1955-1968); and the Rockefeller Foundation. Stern's correspondence with friends and colleagues in Germany, England, and the U. S., during the 1920s-1930s, is of particular note as it documents not only the developments in genetics and the institutional and administrative networks supporting research, but it also offers general comments and observations on science, Germany, and politics. The photographs (2 boxes) include pictures of many prominent geneticists and scientists. Principles of Human Genetics,

The experimental ciliatologist David L. Nanney spent much of his career studying the protozoan . Under Tracy M. Sonneborn at Indiana University, he completed a dissertation in 1951 on the mating habits of , but soon after joining the faculty at the University of Michigan, he turned his attention to . During his subsequent career in Ann Arbor (1951-1959) and at the University of Illinois (1959-1991), Nanney made a series of fundamental contributions to the cytology, genetics, developmental biology, and evolution of ciliates, influencing the work of other biologists such as Joe Frankel, Janina Kaczanowska, Linda Hufnagel, and Nicola Ricci. Since his retirement in 1991, Nanney has remained in Urbana. The Nanney Papers include a dense run of professional correspondence with ciliatologists, geneticists, students and colleagues regarding his pioneering research on ciliates and other professional matters. Of particular note is an extensive correspondence with Sonneborn, accompanied by several biographical essays written after Sonneborn's death, and a large body of correspondence of the controversial reorganization of the biological sciences departments at the University of Illinois in the 1970s. The collection also includes a selection of Nanney's writings and a handful of photographs. Tetrahymena Paramecium Tetrahymena
