The following year he joined the staff of the Boston Post. He served in World War I as a Military Intelligence Officer. Well known as staff correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post and as an author of travel books, Roberts retired in 1928 to write the Chronicles of Arundel, a series of Maine historical novels; the series eventually included Arundel (1930), The Lively Lady (1931), Rabble in Arms (1933), and Captain Caution (1934). His later novels included Northwest Passage (1937), Oliver Wiswell (1940), Lydia Bailey (1946), and Boon Island (1955 : about an actual shipwreck in early Maine history). He died in 1957.

Roberts specialized in the writing of richly detailed historical fiction.
Kenneth Lewis Roberts was born on December 8, 1885 in Kennebunk, Maine. He was a reporter, humor columnist, editor, and historical novelist. His major works include Arundel (1930), Northwest Passage (1937), and Oliver Wiswell (1940). Roberts died in Kennebunkport, Maine, on July 21, 1957.
Professor of Civil Engineering, Cornell University.
American journalist, author, editor.
Kenneth Roberts was born in Kennebunk, Maine, and educated at Cornell. He worked as a journalist and wrote articles for various periodicals, making his name as a humorist, and served in military intelligence in World War I, while continuing to publish articles under a pseudonym. Booth Tarkington helped him plan his first novel, Arundel, and he became a master of painstakingly researched historical fiction, perhaps most notably Northwest Passage; he was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize for historical fiction. Roberts was a talented, diverse writer, writing several popular, criticially-acclaimed novels, and producing non-fiction throughout his life, including works on dowsing, literary criticism, his beloved Maine, and Florida.
Kenneth Lewis Roberts was born in Kennebunk, Maine, on December 8, 1885. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1908, and over the next two decades served as a reporter, special writer, humor columnist, editor, correspondent, and foreign correspondent for various nationally known newspapers and magazines. During the 1920s he wrote several works of non-fiction, and in 1928 left journalism to become a full-time author.
Roberts felt strongly about historical accuracy and conducted extensive research to provide background for his novels. The backdrop for most of his fiction was northeastern America during the periods of the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. His major works include Arundel, The Lively Lady, Rabble in Arms, Northwest Passage, Oliver Wiswell, and Lydia Bailey.Shortly before his death in 1957, Roberts received a special Pulitzer citation for his historical novels.
During World War I he served as a captain in the U.S. Army with the intelligence section of the Siberian Expeditionary Force. He was married to Anna Sieberling Mosser in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 14, 1911. Kenneth Roberts died childless in Kennebunkport, Maine, on July 21, 1957.

Forester, C. S. (Cecil Scott), 1899-1966. C.S. Forester papers, 1940-1964.
Title:
C.S. Forester papers, 1940-1964.
The C.S. Forester Papers (1940-1964, bulk undated) contain manuscripts for Forester's writings in a variety of genres, both published and unpublished. Most materials appear to be final typescripts, although some works exist in multiple or corrected drafts. Fiction writings represented comprise novels and short stories, including the published works Hornblower and the Atropos (1953), Hornblower and the Hotspur (1962), and The Nightmare (1954). The collection also includes manuscripts of what appear to be two unpublished novels: The Perfect Lady, and The Tranquil God. Non-fiction writings in the collection include book-length texts and articles. Present are multiple typescript drafts and galley proofs for The Age of Fighting Sail (1956), as well as related correspondence; drafts and proofs for The Last Nine Days of the Bismarck (1959); and drafts and notes for an unpublished piece, Leyte Gulf, with correspondence regarding a possible film adaptation. The collection also contains autobiographical pieces in which Forester reflects upon his own experiences and writings, including a draft and proofs for The Hornblower Companion (1964). Writings in other genres include several drafts of a play entitled The Furies, apparently unproduced; short works of criticism, mainly in the form of book reviews and introductions; and a series of "Ballades," with related correspondence. General materials include clippings; a small amount of correspondence with publishers and others; notes and research materials; a screenplay and publicity material for two films adapted from Forester's texts; a program from Nurse Cavell (1933), a play co-written by Forester; works by other writers sent to Forester; and an artfully aged page from a "diary" attributed to Horatio Hornblower.

Roberts, Kenneth Lewis, 1885-1957. Papers of Kenneth Roberts, 1911-1947.
Title:
Papers of Kenneth Roberts, 1911-1947.
The collection consists chiefly of page proofs and correspondence. Bound page proofs (2 vols.), annotated and corrected, are of "Moreau de St. Méry's American Journey, 1793-1798" as translated and edited by Kenneth Roberts and Anna M. Roberts, 1947. The preface, which explains the reason for the translation, is by Kenneth Roberts, and the introduction is by Stewart L. Mims. Moreau de Saint-Méry emigrated to Philadelphia from France during the French Revolution. Roberts first learned of him while doing research for the historical novel "Lydia Bailey" and felt that the Frenchman's astute observations of early American life in "Voyage de Saint-Méry aux États-Unis de l'Amérique, 1793-1798" merited an English translation. With the page proofs is Roberts's bookplate, in a design which was also used for some of his postcards. Correspondence consists of both personal and business letters, many sent from Roberts's home in Kennebunkport, Me. Personal letters include two sent to his friend, Franklin P. Adams. In the first (1911 December 20), Roberts thanks Adams for his gift of a book by Arnold Bennett. In the second (1918 September 21), written while en route to Siberia on an army intelligence assignment during World War I, Roberts tells about the trip and asks about friends and organizations back in Washington, D.C. Business letters and postcards from Roberts include those communicating with descendants of revolutionary war soldiers (1930), accepting a writing assignment (1939), declining permission to translate his old works (1939), requesting several books from Mr. Solle, a Michigan bookshop owner (1944), and replying to letters about his work. In these replies, Roberts offers opinions on a variety of literary and historical topics. Replying to Dr. Kronovet (1937), Roberts expresses an unfavorable opinion of American realists, commenting that they were just imitators of Zola. In a letter to Walter S. Funnell (1941), Roberts gives his opinion on a particular battle of the American Revolution and recommends a chapter on the subject in Charles Francis Adams's book, "Studies Military and Diplomatic, 1775-1865." Also included is a letter (1945) to E.J. Halter in which Roberts discusses the nature of book collecting, expressing the view that it is better to collect books for enjoyment, whatever their edition, than simply to hunt for rare first editions. He states his own enjoyment of Arnold Bennett's works and his dislike of his own first edition of "Arundel." Roberts also specifies some different editions of "Northwest Passage," "Oliver Wiswell," and "Rabble in Arms" for Halter to purchase, compare and see which he preferred. With the correspondence is an autographed quotation beginning "The southwest wind brought us ..." from "Rabble in Arms."
