The collection contains single letters written by Puritan divines John Cotton and John Davenport and larger numbers of letters from George Beaumont, Richard Dell, Stephen Goffe, and M. Harris. Correspondence constitutes the bulk of the papers. While there is some correspondence to and from Henry Davenport (1811-1898), it is primarily between Bennett F. Davenport and his relatives, members of related families, town clerks and historical societies. The majority of this relates to Thomas Davenport (ca. 1604-1685) and Richard Davenport (ca. 1606-1665) and their descendants. This is the continuation of his published work. Some of the correspondence with individuals from allied families is concerned with those related families including the Hagar, Coolidge and Sturtevant families. The correspondence between William Hagar and Bennett F. Davenport, in particular, includes a genealogy of nine typed pages with nine generations of descendants of John Hagar (1726-ca. 1796). The "Davenport Family Record" manuscript by Darius Davenport (1789-1853) presents his ancestors and descendants. A manuscript, presumably by Bennett, provides the descendants of Francis Davenport (d. 1707) and in the reverse direction of the same volume is the descendants of Captain Richard Davenport (ca. 1606-1665) of Salem and Boston. The indices, again all presumably by Bennett, include an "Index to Descendants of Thomas Davenport of Dorchester," Index to Davenports of Unknown Descent in America, " and an "Index for the Descendants of Reverend John Davenport and Captain Richard Davenport." The graphic material includes postcards and photographs of various Davenports or of the homes in which they lived. The original documents, 23 between 1636-1697, 11 between 1701-1797, and 8 between 1801-1844, which include attachments, bonds, court records, decedents' estates, deeds, depositions, funeral sermons, land grants, marriage records, pensions, photographs (late 1800s+), poems, and probate records.

Manuscript, on paper, in a single hand, of detailed sermon notes on over 100 sermons preached in Boston in Massachusetts Bay between 1652 and 1656, most at Thursday Lectures. 12 were delivered by John Cotton; over 90 were delivered by John Norton, who succeeded Cotton as pastor of First Church. Included are notes on the funeral sermon for Major-General Edward Gibbons, one of the first settlers of Charlestown, who died in December of 1654.

The collection represents Alice (Cheney) Baltzell's research of her Cheney ancestors. The collection consists primarily of genealogical notes regarding the Cheney family. The material includes pedigrees, county and town records, parish records, deeds and wills. These records are transcripts or photocopies taken from original documents. There is very little source material in this collection. The primary focus of the collection is on the English research of the Cheney family's origins in England prior to immigrating to New England in 1635. The bulk of the material is the establishment of the history of John and William Cheney in England, and the lineage of ancestors that preceded them. The information regarding the Cheneys in England is taken from parish records in Waltham Abbey, Essex, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, and Lanbourn, Berkshire. Professional genealogists were hired in England to conduct extensive research in church records, wills, deeds, court records and Chancery proceedings. There is some material on allied families including John Cheneys wife, Anne (Somner) Cheney and Elizabeth S. Cheney's ancestors, the Whiting family and the Clapp family. The typewritten notes take the form of a series of Cheney Search documents, detailing the information taken from research in England. A set of parallel documents describes the process of the genealogical search. Correspondence with several English genealogists is the source of most of the typewritten transcripts of original documents. There are also two 17th century original deeds from John Cheney.
