The collection consists chiefly of letters addressed to Albert H. Tracy from 1815 to 1857, concerning economic conditions and matters of politics and government in New York State and the United States. In particular, many of these letters relate to Tracy's own career in the United States House of Representatives and the New York State Senate. There are also a number of letters concerning Tracy's involvement in the national conventions of Anti-Mason and Whig Parties and the presidential election campaigns. Tracy's correspondents included a number of prominent political figures of the time period: Millard Fillmore, Martin Van Buren, Nicholas Biddle, William Henry Seward, Thurlow Weed, Silas Wright, DeWitt Clinton, William L. Marcy, Lewis Cass, Francis Granger, and John C. Spencer.

Correspondence is related to his aspirations as an artist and poet, service in the Mexican War and the Civil War, and activities as Adjutant General of Maine. Prominent correspondents include Albert H. Tracy, John C. and Jessie B. Frémont, and Franklin Pierce. Diaries cover his service in the 10th Infantry, Camp Scott, Wyoming Territory, the Mormon expedition, official and social life in Washington, D.C. and Portland, Maine, and his participation in Frémont's campaigns in Missouri, Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley.
