Handwritten correspondence, handwritten and printed orders, and a handwritten campaign map. Also included are photocopies of handwritten correspondence apparently taken from a microfilm collection. The bulk of the materials were written in the summer and fall of 1876 during the campaigns against the Dakota and Cheyenne Indians. They document the activitiesand condition of the 5th Cavalry during these campaigns. Some letters also document that unit's activities in campaigning against the Ute Indians of Colorado in 1879. Many of the items are either to or from the 5th's commander, Wesley Merritt (1836-1910).

The muster roll of Company B, Second Regiment U.S. Cavalry, October 31-December 31,1864, was compiled by 1st Lt. James Cahill. The Company was camped near Middletown, Va., and participated in General Wesley Merritt's Loudoun Valley and Gordonsville raids. The muster roll of Company C, of the Battalion of U.S. Engineers, October 31-December 31, 1864, was compiled by 1st Lt. Garnett J. Lydicker. The company countermined at Ft. Stedman until November 19, built winter quarters, and went on reconnaissance December 10. The muster roll of Company F, 1st Regiment, U.S. Cavalry, February 28-April 30,1865, was compiled by Captain David Perry. The Company was present at the battle of Waynesboro; occupied Charlottesville and Scottsville, where they spent March 6-12 destroying the canal and Orange and Alexandria Rail Road to Beaverdam; marched to Dinwiddie Court House where they charged and captured 80 prisoners; attacked at Five Forks, and followed the retreating Confederate Army to Appomattox. The muster roll of Company J, 1st Regiment, U.S. Cavalry, February 28-April 20, 1865, was compiled by 1st Lt. Reuben F. Bernard. The Company was present at the battle of Waynesboro; marched thorugh Chharlottesville, Howardsville, Scottsville, Columbia and Beaverdam; crossed the Pamunkey and the James, fought at Five Points, and followed the Confederate Army to Appomattox, encountering and engaging twice. Served as General Sheridan's escort after the surrender. The muster roll of the 5th Regiment, U.S. Cavalry, February 28-April 30, 1865, was compiled by 1st Lt. Gustavus [Urban?]. The regiment charged a defensive earthwork at the South Anna bridge, participated in Five Forks where Captain Drummond was mortally wounded, and pursued and engaged at Farmville and Appomattox Court House.

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Handwritten and signed letters. Two are dated 25 Sept. 1876 and the other is dated 1 Oct. 1876. All three were written at Ft. Laramie, Wyoming and addressed to Wesley Merritt, commander of the 5th Calvary. Crook orders the discharge of some scouts, advises that "California Joe" be made the Merritt's guide, and tells him how to attack Red Cloud's Dakota Indians.
