Crook was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Matthews Crook on a farm near Taylorsville, Montgomery County, Ohio (near Dayton). Nominated to the United States Military Academy by Congressman Robert Schenck, he graduated in 1852, ranking near the bottom of his class. Marion Perry Maus was born in Maryland on August 25, 1850. He attended West Point Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the First Infantry in 1874. He served at various posts in Nebraska and Dakota Territory, including Fort Randall and Fort Sully. He later was posted to Texas and Arizona in the 1880s and California in the 1890s.
