The Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) was founded in 1883 in Creighton, Pennsylvania, by Captain John Baptiste Ford and John Pitcairn. The plant quickly became known for its glass products using the plate process and developed methods for creating thinner, and more versatile, high quality glass. The company made glass for the automobile industry and, during World War II, focused production on military projects, such as glass for airplanes and developing synthetic resins. In addition to glass, the company now produces paint, coatings, and chemicals and operates in over sixty countries.

Molitor, Joseph W. Joseph W. Molitor architectural photographs, 1935-1985 (bulk 1946-1980).
Title:
Joseph W. Molitor architectural photographs, 1935-1985 (bulk 1946-1980).
The bulk of this collection consists of more than 22,000 black and white photographic negatives and more than 10,600 black and white photographic prints documenting commercial, institutional, religious, and residential architecture throughout the United States, with particular emphasis on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. These images date from the mid-1930s to Molitor's retirement in the mid-1980s, with the great majority of images created between 1946 and 1980. Also included in the collection are images of landscapes, industrial design, portraits, and events of personal significance to Molitor. In some select cases, color prints, color negatives, color transparencies, and 35mm slides are also available in addition to or instead of the black and white negatives and prints. Researchers are also advised that documents in this collection indicate that when faced with a lack of storage space in 1973, Molitor contacted clients to return inactive negatives that they had comissioned before 1955. In at least some cases, those clients declined to accept their negatives and Molitor subsequently destroyed the images. Thus, this collection has lacunae in the negatives series.

Inbound correspondence, 1911-1918.
The records consist of inbound correspondence received between the years 1911 and 1918. The correspondence is incomplete with the bulk dating from 1915 to 1918. The records passed through the hands of a local antique dealer who began to break them up and sell the pieces as thematic ephemera collections. For example, correspondence relating to firearms and sports fishing was sold separately.

Orr, Leighton E. Papers of Leighton E. Orr, 1968-2003.
Title:
Papers of Leighton E. Orr, 1968-2003.
This collection contains the reports generated by Leighton E. Orr in the course of his work as a technical glass and ceramics consultant between 1968 and 2003. Orr lent his expertise to a variety of projects, large and small, throughout the United States and Canada, generating approximately 950 reports. These reports feature summaries, technical drawings and photographs. The collection preserves Orr's original order which is generally a chronologically organized number scheme, with certain folders dedicated to individual clients. Each folder contains a range of reports, with the specific clients and projects being named in the folder scope content notes, which are inventories directly based upon Orr's index found in Box 1, Folder 1. In many cases Orr employed idiosyncratic spellings and abbreviations in his index, while the actual reports tended towards accuracy in these matters. When possible, to facilitate keyword searching, misspelled names and odd abbreviations have been normalized. The materials in this collection date from September 9, 1968 to May 10, 2003.

Director's Office Records, 1955-1977.
The Director's Office records 1955-1977 are comprised almost entirely of business correspondence between the Director of the museum and other people and institutions though other records, such as receipts and publications, are occasionally present. During this nascent phase of the museum the Director's Office handled almost all aspects of business and consequently these files reflect a wide spectrum of museum concerns including publicity, acquisitions, finances, staff hiring, construction, and expansion of the museum. Some files are devoted to individuals and institutions while others are labelled with subjects such as Inquiries, Acquisitions, and Employment. The subject headings and content of the materials remains quite consistent throughout the years, even through the tenures of different Directors.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Public Affairs Dept. Records, 1912-1981.
Title:
Records, 1912-1981.
The Public Affairs Department records contain biographical sketches of deceased officers, employees and du Pont family members, and histories of company plants, predecessor companies and all line and staff departments. The alphabetical history file contains press releases, memoranda, and pamphlets, which were assembled for various public relations campaigns. Of particular interest is the file documenting the Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn "Better Things for Better Living" campaign. There is also considerable information on the company's pavilions at the 1939 and 1964 New York World's Fairs, efforts to counter the Nye Committee's investigation, lawsuits with other chemical companies over products and patent infringement, and the General Motors and Cellophane antitrust suits. World War II-era publicity stresses Du Pont's contribution to the war effort and its role in the atomic energy program is well described. More recent records describe the impact of the energy crisis of the early 1970s on the chemical industry and the Ralph Nader "Company State" investigation.

Corsini, Harold. Photograph collection of Harold Corsini, 1940s-1970s.
Title:
Photograph collection of Harold Corsini, 1940s-1970s.
The Harold Corsini Photograph Collection contains photographs produced from the 1940s to the 1970s. Approximately 440 projects are represented in print, negative, and slide form. Many jobs for the US Steel Corporation are industrial in content. Other photographs produced for local and national advertising agencies were captured from locations around the country as well as in the studio. All are commercial and creative in content. Photographs produced for US Steel artistically represent the essence of the steel industry. From labor to output, and followed by unique advertisements of commercial goods, the culture of the company is widely portrayed. Included are interior and exterior views of steel mills nationwide, depicting machinery, architecture and surrounding landscapes. Employees are creatively portrayed in varying aspects from executive portraits to visual documentaries of steel production. Corsini worked principally with two main advertising agencies: Kellogg Media Group (KMG) and Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BD & O). Photographs were also produced for national and local firms including Iron Age Shoes and Westinghouse. Other notable western Pennsylvania companies that Corsini worked with were Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG), Alcoa, and H.J. Heinz Company. Photographic advertisements vary from studio-based commercial shots featuring products such as food goods, office equipment, and bath fixtures, to on-site views of architecture and interior design. A small portion of the collection contains personal artistic photographs taken while traveling in India, Thailand, and Egypt highlighting local temples, monuments, and people. Also included are black and white images, taken by Corsini in the Pacific while serving as a WWII correspondent, featuring war aircraft and personnel; as well as unrelated commercial portraits and other works.
