Frieda Emma Johanna Maria von Richthofen was born on August 11, 1879 in Metz, France. In 1912, Frieda met David Herbert (D.H.) Lawrence, and they married in 1914. Frieda Lawrence was intimately involved with D.H. Lawrence's work. Facets of her personality are often discernable as components of characters in his poems and novels. After D.H. Lawrence's death in 1930, Frieda settled in New Mexico. Frieda died in Taos on August 11, 1956.
Author and wife of D.H. Lawrence.
Wife of D.H.
Born Emma Maria Frieda Johanna Baroness (Freiin) von Richthofen, Frieda Lawrence (1879-1956) was the second of three daughters born to Prussian Baron Friedrich von Richthofen and Anna Marquier von Richthofen. The family lived in a rural suburb of Metz, an area recently conquered in the Franco-Prussian War and subjected to a regime of forced Germanization. Frieda attended a local Roman Catholic convent school but found few friends among the French population. Her social world was composed of her sisters, with whom she alternately competed for parental attention and allied herself with in order to manipulate their parents, the family servants in whose care the girls were generally left, and Prussian soldiers whom she met while playing in the trenches left over from the war.
In July of 1898 Anna von Richthofen took Frieda and her younger sister on their annual summer visit to Freiburg, in the Black Forest. It was here that Frieda met Ernest Weekley, a language scholar and lecturer at University College, Nottingham. Overwhelmed by Frieda's looks and natural intelligence, he quickly made an offer of marriage, which she accepted. They were wed on August 29, 1899, and the couple settled in Nottingham, England, where Weekley continued his teaching and Frieda endeavored to fit into the working class neighborhood. Their first child, Charles Montague, was born in June of 1900, followed by Elsa Agnes Frieda in September 1902, and Barbara Joy in October 1904.
Between 1902 and 1912, Frieda had a series of affairs, including one with Otto Gross in 1907. In 1912 she met David Herbert Lawrence, then a student of her husband, and within a few months they eloped. They traveled first to Metz and then spent the summer traveling through the Alps and into Italy. In 1913 they returned to England where Frieda attempted to see her children, but was prevented by Weekley who filed for a divorce. The divorce was made final in May of 1914 and it was not until the late 1920s that she was able to freely communicate with her children again. Frieda and D. H. Lawrence were married in a private ceremony in July 1914.
For the next several years they traveled almost constantly in France, Italy, and Germany, staying with friends, or in borrowed housing, borrowing money when they needed to. Prevented from leaving England during World War I, they stayed in remote towns where they were harassed by police and ostracized by the local citizens because of her nationality and his burgeoning reputation as a pornographic writer. After the war they traveled mostly in Italy between 1919 and 1921.
In 1922 they sailed for America via Ceylon, Australia, and Tahiti. They reached San Francisco in September 1922 and traveled on to Taos, New Mexico, at the invitation of Mable Dodge Luhan. They spent the winter there before moving on to Mexico in the spring of 1923. Later that year they returned to Europe to visit Frieda's children and ailing mother. In 1924 they revisited the American Southwest for the last time before D.H. Lawrence's death. In 1930 D.H. Lawrence died near Vence, Italy, of tuberculosis and was buried nearby. Shortly after his death, Frieda returned to England in an attempt to sort out his estate, and then traveled between Italy and Germany for the rest of the year. In 1931 she returned to Taos in the company of Angelo Ravagli.
Frieda purchased land in Taos and built a ranch which Ravagli managed. In 1934 Not I, but the Wind, Frieda's memoir of life with D.H. Lawrence, was published. Kiowa ranch became a summer home when Frieda acquired a winter home in El Prado, Mexico. During World War II, Frieda and Ravagli, subjected to suspicion and harassment in America, stayed in Mexico. In 1950 Frieda married Ravagli. The union was largely a matter of convenience to protect his immigrant status, as their relationship had become more of a business partnership than romance. Frieda made a final visit to England in 1952 to visit her children and meet her grandchildren.
Frieda Lawrence died of a stroke, early in the morning on her birthday, August 11, 1956. Her autobiography, And the Fullness Thereof, which she had been slowly pulling together over several years, was published posthumously in 1964 as Frieda Lawrence, the Memoirs and Correspondence.
Ruth Hannas was born on 26 September 1892 in Greeley, Colorado. She met Freida von Richthofen Lawrence in 1923 aboard the "Orbita." She was a teacher in Berkeley, California, and in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ruth Hannas died in January 1976 in Birmingham, Alabama.
A distant relative of the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen, Frieda von Richthofen was born on 11 August 1879 to an aristocratic family in Metz, Germany. In 1899 she moved to England after marrying Ernest Weekley, a much older man than she; the couple had three children. Frieda met the author D. H. Lawrence in March 1912 and the two eloped to Germany, leaving her children behind. After her divorce from Weekley, Frieda and Lawrence married in 1914.
Lawrence suffered from frail health and the couple travelled widely, leaving post-war England at the earliest opportunity. They eventually settled at Kiowa Ranch near Taos, New Mexico. They left New Mexico for Lawrence's health and went to Scandicci, Italy, near Tuscany. After Lawrence's death in Vence, France in 1930, Frieda returned to the ranch at Taos to live with Angelo Ravagli, with whom she had carried on an intermittent affair since 1925. In 1935, Frieda sent Angelo to Vence, to have Lawrence's body exhumed and cremated and his ashes brought back to the ranch. They married in 1950. Frieda died on her 77th birthday in Taos.
David Herbert Richards Lawrence (D. H. Lawrence) was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England on September 11, 1885 to Lydia Lawrence (n?e Beardsall), a school teacher, and Arthur Lawrence, a miner. D. H. Lawrence won a scholarship to the Nottingham Boys' High School (1898) and by 1902 had become an uncertified teacher. In 1906 he began a two year teacher-training course at University College, Nottingham and in 1907 began writing The White Peacock. By 1910, The White Peacock was published and Lawrence had begun work on Sons and Lovers; shortly after, he gave up teaching.
In 1912, Lawrence met Frieda Weekley, wife of a professor of French at the University College (Frieda was the second daughter of Baron Friedrich von Richthofen), and eloped with her the same year although she did not get a divorce from her husband and marry Lawrence until July 13, 1914. During this period, Lawrence wrote and had published several novels and works of poetry. Frieda and Lawrence spent much of their time in Italy. In 1920, Lawrence had a private edition of Women in Love published in New York, though he had finished the work in 1916.
Lawrence and Frieda traveled the world, from England to Sicily to Ceylon and Australia. In 1922, they traveled to Taos, New Mexico and the Kiowa Ranch, their first home in America. The impetus for coming to Taos was his lengthy correspondence with Mabel Dodge Luhan who gave the Kiowa Ranch to the Lawrences. Because Lawrence had refused to accept such a valuable gift, Luhan gave the ranch to Frieda. Lawrence later insisted on giving Mabel his original manuscript for Sons and Lovers as payment. During his time in Taos, Lawrence worked on The Woman Who Rode Away and Other Stories; Mornings in Mexico (many of which are in New Mexico); and The Plumed Serpent.
From 1923-1925, Lawrence divided his time between Mexico, New Mexico, and trips to Europe. During his time in New Mexico, Lawrence was involved in the swirl of the Taos art colony, and with his English compatriot, Dorothy Brett. The Plumed Serpent was published in 1927 and Lawrence finished work on and published Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1928. An exhibition of Lawrence's paintings held in London in 1929 was raided by police. D.H. Lawrence died in France, March 2, 1930. Frieda Lawrence returned to New Mexico in 1933, and in 1935 D.H. Lawrence's ashes were brought to the Kiowa Ranch where a small chapel was built to receive them.

Brinig, Myron, 1897-1991. Myron Brinig memoirs, circa 1980s.
Title:
Myron Brinig memoirs, circa 1980s.
This collection consists of two versions of Brinig's unpublished memoir. The older version is titled "Someone at the Door: Memoirs of an Outsider." In 1981, Brinig brought this memoir to Earl Ganz to edit for publication. They titled the updated version "Love from a Stranger." Both manuscripts recount Brinig's Jewish heritage, his early life as a writer and work in the Hollywood film industry and his time spent in Taos with other writers and artists including, Cady Wells, Frieda von Richthofen Lawrence and Mabel Dodge Luhan. Also, in the memoirs Brinig openly discusses his homosexuality, a fact he kept private most of his life. Using Brinig's memoirs, Earl Ganz published a novel in 2006 called The Taos Truth Game, which is based on Brinig's time in Taos and his relationship with Cady Wells.

Luhan, Mabel Dodge, 1879-1962. Mabel Dodge Luhan papers, 1859-1961 (bulk 1913-1951).
Title:
Mabel Dodge Luhan papers, 1859-1961 (bulk 1913-1951).
The Luhan papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, scrapbooks and personal papers documenting the life and work of Mabel Dodge Luhan. Series I, Correspondence, consists chiefly of incoming letters from family, friends, fans and publishers. Luhan's activities and relationships in New York and New Mexico, with artists, writers, labor leaders and Native American Indians, are well documented. Correspondents include John Evans, John Collier, Gertrude and Leo Stein, Hutchins Hapgood, Neith Boyce, Maurice Sterne, Alfred Stieglitz, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Edmond Jones, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Dorothy Brett and Georgia O'Keeffe. Lawrence, Frieda von Richthofen, 1879-1956. Frieda Lawrence Collection, 1870-1969.
Title:
Frieda Lawrence Collection, 1870-1969.
Manuscripts, correspondence, letters between her husbands and her mother, guest books, and telegrams of condolence on her death, make up the Frieda Lawrence Collection, 1870-1969. The Works series contains drafts of Lawrence's book NOT I, BUT THE WIND (1934) and portions of "And the Fullness Thereof," which was published in 1964 as FRIEDA LAWRENCE, THE MEMOIRS AND CORRESPONDENCE. Also included are a series of numbered notebooks and a diary in which Lawrence recorded her thoughts and philosophies throughout her life, as well as articles and essays, some about her life with D.H. Lawrence. While there is some business correspondence having to do with the copyrights and royalties from D.H. Lawrence's works, and the legal battles that occurred regarding his estate, the Letters and Recipient series consist mostly of Lawrence's personal letters to and from friends and family. Of note are the letters between Lawrence and Richard Aldington, Barbara Barr, Dorothy Brett, Witter Bynner, Otto Gross, Enid Hilton, Else Jaffe-Richthofen, Knud and Else Merrild, Mabel Dodge Luhan, John Murry, Angelo Ravagli, Anna von Richthofen, and Tennessee Williams. The Miscellaneous series is mostly composed of letters to and from people other than Lawrence, including several from D.H. Lawrence and Ernest Weekley to Anna von Richthofen. Also included are manuscripts by other authors including a few by D.H. Lawrence, Irving Ravetch's screenplay of SONS AND LOVERS, Elise Aylen's play based on THE PLUMED SERPENT, and part of M.E. Ross's A D.H. LAWRENCE ANTHOLOGY. Additionally, there are guest and address books, Lawrence's social security card, three passports, and a large collection of letters and postcards, written in German, from Baron Podewils to Anna von Richthofen spanning 1886-1912.

Weyhe Gallery displayed works by Dorothy Brett early in her career. Her breathless letters to Zigrosser are full of the progress of her painting; details of life in Taos; difficulty of selling her work and placing it with dealers; praise of her work by John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Awa Tsireh; the exploits of Georgia O'Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Frieda von Richtofen Lawrence, and Rebecca Strand; memories of Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry; her growing confidence in her painting; criticism of Aldous Huxley's book Point Counter Point; sharp comments on the death of D. H. Lawrence ("unmitigated stupidity"); the poor art market during the Depression and money trouble. After a silence of 32 years there was an exchange of letters in 1967.

Title:
Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968).
Holograph and typescript works and correspondence from friends and associates make up the majority of the Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968), supplemented by letters and diaries by Johnson and works and correspondence by other authors. The Works Series contains poems, short stories, biographical sketches, essays, reviews, and other literary output by Spud Johnson. Of particular note are various drafts of an untitled novel about Don Grant, holograph and typescript versions of Horizontal Yellow (1935), and groups of essays published for "The Gad Fly" and "The Horsefly" columns. The Correspondence Series is divided into two subseries: Outgoing and Incoming. While there are not a great number of letters from Johnson, his correspondence with William Goyen, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Lynn Riggs is moderately well represented. Better represented are friends, acquaintances, and business associates who wrote to Johnson, including Mary Austin, Dorothy Brett, Witter Bynner, Gladys Cannon, Alexander Fechin, Haniel Long, Daniel McCarthy, the New Yorker, Ruth Swaine, and others. There are also a large number of letters from unidentified writers. The Personal Papers Series is composed of Johnson's diaries, many of which are sequentially numbered and contain observations, notes, some day-to-day activities, and some creative work. Also present are a commonplace book, records dealing with the publication of Horse Fly, Horizontal Yellow, and Laughing Horse, and various notes and receipts. Of particular interest are nine etched plastic printing plates used for Laughing Horse. The Third-Party Works and Correspondence Series includes materials by Witter Bynner, Arthur Ficke, Robert Frost, Mabel Luhan, Lynn Riggs, and others. Many of the third-party works were sent to Johnson for inclusion in Laughing Horse and include notes and letters to Johnson from the authors. There are also a number of cover letters to Norman MacLeod, fellow poet and editor. Included in this section are a number of limericks written by friends for Johnson. Third-party correspondents are generally friends and acquaintances writing to each other, often about Johnson or his affairs, and include Dorothy Brett, Arthur Ficke, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Carl Van Vechten, and others.

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.

The Luhan papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, scrapbooks and personal papers documenting the life and work of Mabel Dodge Luhan. Series I, Correspondence, consists chiefly of incoming letters from family, friends, fans and publishers. Correspondents include John Evans, John Collier, Gertrude and Leo Stein, Hutchins Hapgood, Neith Boyce, Maurice Sterne, Alfred Stieglitz, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Edmond Jones, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Dorothy Brett and Georgia O'Keeffe. The one significant group of outgoing letters is to psychoanalyst Smith Ely Jelliffe. There are drafts of Lorenzo in Taos, three of the four published volumes of Intimate Memories, and several unpublished autobiographical writings. Series III, Photographs, consists of portraits and snapshots of people and places, including Mabel Dodge and Tony Luhan, family, friends, Native American Indians, and Luhan's homes in Florence and Taos. There are photographs by James Edward Abbe, Ansel Adams, Laura Gilpin, Ernest Knee, Edward Weston and others. Series IV, Scrapbooks, consists of seventeen scrapbooks containing clippings and letters devoted to Luhan's published books and to subjects of interest to her. Lawrence, D. H. (David Herbert), 1885-1930. D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Title:
D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Manuscripts of novels, poems, short stories, plays, and other writings, correspondence, transcripts of court hearings, and miscellany trace the writing career and personal life of D.H. Lawrence, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935), as well as popular reaction to his work. The Works series contains drafts of many of Lawrence's major works, including Sons and Lovers, Aaron's Rod, Women in Love, and four versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Also included is a holograph of "Odour of Chrysanthemums" transcribed by Louise Burrows, as well as numerous versions of The Plumed Serpent: Quetzalcoatl and Mr. Noon. Page proofs and paste-ups from the publication of The Body of God, a series of poems by Lawrence produced posthumously, are included. The materials in this series are in a variety of formats including notes and fragments, notebooks, typescripts, galley proofs, paste-ups, and page proofs. The Letters series is extensive and made up largely of holograph letters and notes from Lawrence. The series is fairly evenly split between business and personal matters and several recipients of these letters are particularly well represented, including Lady Cynthia Asquith, Achsah and Earl Brewster, Curtis Brown Ltd., A.W. MacLeod, Knud Merrild, Nancy Pearn, Laurence Pollinger, and Thomas Seltzer. The Recipient series is made conspicuous by its small size. Very few letters to Lawrence are included and most of those that are present deal with business. The Curtis Brown Ltd. Correspondence series, organized chronologically, consists of about 1500 items and includes letters to Lawrence, booksellers, agents, Curtis Brown's lawyers, and various other people involved in the publication and sale of Lawrence's writing. Also included are contracts with Frieda Lawrence for 1933 and 1934, as well as letters, financial statements and listings of copyright accounts sent to her after Lawrence's death. The Miscellaneous series consists of a wide variety of materials directly and indirectly related to Lawrence. A few personal items belonging to Lawrence--passports, address books, bank statements, check stubs--are included. However, the bulk of the series is made up of correspondence between other parties regarding Lawrence's work, transcripts from the American and English obscenity trials involving Lady Chatterley's Lover, and manuscripts of scholarly works about Lawrence. Noteable among the latter category are the complete notes and working manuscripts for F.W. Roberts' book, A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence (1959).

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
Title:
Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
This series consists of the central editorial files of the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Company. It contains the correspondence for the day-to-day operations of the firm, including letters from foreign publishers seeking publication and translation rights, contacts with young writers, inquiries from aspiring authors, correspondence on legal matters such as copyright, letters from literary agents, and requests for information about writers. The General Correspondence series also contains correspondence between editors and Knopf authors, many files of which follow the creation of a book from the original idea to its final publication. Taken as a whole, this series offers a comprehensive overview of the activities of the editorial offices. The main strength of the series derives from the individual files devoted to writers published by Knopf. These files typically reveal the writer's first connection with the company, which might have occurred when the firm contacted the writer expressing their interest in her or his work, or when the author submitted a manuscript. Files follow the correspondence between the editor and writer, revealing the relationship between the two as the manuscript progresses, continues once the book is published, and shows how the book is received and how well it sells. Especially interesting is the way the files reveal how an editor would guide the creative process, as she or he suggests changes, additions, or deletions. While the vast majority of files contain correspondence only, some files relate to the inner workings of the firm. These are labelled by department or, more often, by employee name; the most significant are for Blanche and Alfred A. Knopf, and can be found in most years. The files rely on the use of documentation in the form of internal memoranda that were sent from editors and employees of other departments to update the Knopfs on current activities. Folders titled with the name of a trip taken by Alfred or Blanche Knopf in a specific year often include narrative descriptions of the visit, including detailed lists of publishers, scouts, literary agents, and writers with whom they met. Further, information about writers is also available in these folders. For example, internal memos about the rejection of John Knowles' A Separate Peace are in one of Blanche Knopf's European trip folders. Other employee named files, like those of Secretary and later President William A. Koshland, give an overview of the firm's administrative history.
