Savage and includes correspondence to his Uncle Lemuel Shaw; correspondence with his business partner in San Salvador, El Salvador, Joaquin Mathe regarding the shipment of various goods; documents related to a petition on behalf of his brother, Henry Savage (1804-1849), for compensation for diplomatic work in Guatemala; a diary kept between 1848-49 while in Central America; and an inventory of property in Guatemala, 1882-87. Samuel P. Savage's papers relate to his work as a merchant and include invoices for goods on various ships (such as the Mary), receipts, and correspondence, most notably with his business partner David Jeffries. Collection also includes papers from other members of the Savage, Shaw, and Hayward families, such as a letterbook kept by Charles Savage (1785-1840), 1821, and correspondence between Charles and his sister Hope Savage Shaw regarding their brother-in-law Herman Melville; and correspondence between Lemuel Hayward, his parents, and his sister Susanna Hayward Shaw, ca. 1770-89.

Personal diaries kept by Samuel P. Savage of Weston, Mass., 1770-73, 1780-90, 1792, and 1795. Savage, merchant, judge, and member of the Massachusetts Board of War, used his diaries to record daily events such as the weather, wind, constellations, marriages, deaths in his community, sermons preached, and crops planted. Of particular interest are the daily entries during the Revolutionary War. His diaries also include reports of voting returns in Weston, poetry, lists of facts related to Massachusetts and the Revolutionary War, and lists of members of Congress. 1783 diary includes a genealogy of the Savage family. Most of the diaries include interleaved pages of the Massachusetts Almanac which contain annotations of Savage's planting calendar. Many diaries also include newspapers clippings on such subjects as spiritual healing and political activity in the United States.

The bulk of the collection contains the papers of Samuel Hay Savage and include petitions (written with Daniel Webster and Lemuel Shaw) of behalf of his brother Henry, for compensation for diplomatic work as charge d'affaires in Guatemala and correspondence with his lawyer, John Sidney Webb; travel letters from Guatemala, 1848-87; correspondence and receipts for goods (such as coffee) traded to Boston from his properties in San Salvador, El Salvador; and bills and receipts for personal items purchased for his home in Boston. The papers of Samuel P. Savage relate to his business as an insurance agent for trading vessels, including the sloops Friendship and Lucretia; receipts for goods sold and purchased, such as slaves, and for his business as a Boston merchant; and documents related to his position as chairman of the Board of War during the Revolutionary War, primarily relating to supplying the army, including information on the arrival of the Frigate Deane. A large portion of the Hayward family papers include correspondence between Susanna Hayward (later married to Oakes Shaw, mother of Lemuel Shaw) and her brother, Caleb Hayward, sister, Sarah Hayward, and cousins, Ebenezer and Enoch White. A large portion of the Shaw family papers include correspondence received by Hope and Lemuel Shaw from various nieces and nephews. Savage family papers include legal petitions, estate inventories, deeds, receipts, and correspondence of Habijah and Arthur Savage, and Faith Savage Russell (mother of Samuel P. Savage), 1712-39.

Papers from other Savage family members, 1703-1738, include correspondence received by Lemuel Shaw from various relatives, wills, estate inventories, and legal documents. Collection also includes letters (many with typescripts) written by Gideon Hawley, Congregational minister and missionary to the Indians at Mashpee, Mass. to the Mass. House of Representatives and to Rev. Oakes and Susannah Shaw (in-laws to Hope Savage Shaw, granddaughter of S.P.S.), ca. 1770-1820. Hawley details the living conditions of the tribe, his view on their religious welfare, and petitions for the state to maintain guardianship.
