Papers of merchant, insurance agent, and judge, Samuel P. Savage of Boston and Weston, Mass. The bulk of the collection relates to his business affairs in Boston and contains receipts, invoices and correspondence for goods such as oranges, tar, rum, tea and coffee. Also includes insurance records for the schooners Sally, Rhoda, and the Dolphin. Papers in this collection reflect Savage's role in the Revolutionary War as chairman of the Massachusetts Board of War, and include reports of war activities, such as the capture of spies; and his role as judge in Weston, and justice of the peace in Middlesex County. The collection also includes Savage family papers such as wills, correspondence, and estate inventories. Business correspondents include his partners, Joseph Newmarch, Joseph Frost, and David Jeffries, and other merchants such as John Higginson. Family correspondents include his mother, Faith Russell, and brother, Arthur Savage.
