Samuel Shaw was in Rensselaer County, New York by 1791 when he received a lease for land from Stephen Van Rensselaer, the proprietor of the Manor of Rensselaerwyck. He is listed in Rensselaer County histories as a captain (in Berlin, N.Y.) during the Revolution. Shaw settled in a section of Stephentown which in 1806 became Berlin, or more accurately, South Berlin, just north of the town.
