Samuel Shaw was in Rensselaer County, New York by 1791 when he received a lease for land from Stephen Van Rensselaer, the proprietor of the Manor of Rensselaerwyck. He is listed in Rensselaer County histories as a captain (in Berlin, N.Y.) during the Revolution. Shaw settled in a section of Stephentown which in 1806 became Berlin, or more accurately, South Berlin, just north of the town. For over the next one hundred years lots were added and subtracted, and divided among family members.
