Jerome Alexander correspondence, 1908-1953
Title:
Jerome Alexander correspondence 1908-1953
Jerome Alexander (1876-1959) was the pre-eminent American scientist in the field of colloidal chemistry, the study of substances neither in suspension nor solution, which was pertinent to many other areas of chemistry. In addition to translating a seminal work in the field, Richard Zsigmondy's Colloids and the Ultra-Microscope, he wrote Colloid Chemistry (1919), and edited and contributed to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical, the seven-volume standard work in the field. He also published poetry and essays. Collection consists of correspondence, 1880-1953, primarily letters exchanged with chemists and physicists, including many Nobel Prize winners, concerning their contributions to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical. Correspondents include Mario Ascoli, W. Bancroft, W.M. Bayless, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir William Henry Bragg, Sir William Lawrence Bragg, C. Bridges, A.H. Compton, P. Debye, Albert Einstein, H. Eyring, W.B. Harvey, H.B. Jennings, Alfred Korzybski, E.O. Lawrence, W.J. Mayo, R.A. Millikan, G.B. Pegram, W. Ramsey, A.B. Searle, T. Svedberg, E.C. Urey, E.B. Wilson, and Richard Zsigmondy.

Grenfell, Wilfred Thomason, Sir, 1865-1940. Wilfred Thomason Grenfell papers, 1855-1986 (inclusive), 1892-1940 (bulk).
Title:
Wilfred Thomason Grenfell papers, 1855-1986 (inclusive), 1892-1940 (bulk).
The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, ships' logs, notebooks, writings, speeches, and legal and financial papers documenting Wilfred T. Grenfell's medical missionary work in Labrador, particularly for the years 1930-1940. Also included are scattered papers of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and the Grenfell Associations, containing correspondence, minutes, financial records and reports (1893-1949). The small amount of papers of Ann MacClanahan Grenfell, his wife, consist largely of correspondence related to the Grenfell Association and two travel diaries (1924-1926). Grenfell's correspondence, notebooks and diaries are a valuable source for Labrador and Newfoundland history, as well as economic and social conditions between 1892, when he committed himself to missionary work in Labrador, and his death in 1940. There are also family papers relating to both the Grenfell and MacClanahan families. Providing an overall view of Grenfell's life are twenty-one scrapbooks (1893-1939) and a collection of nearly 10,500 photographs of life in Newfoundland and Labrador (1890-1940), of various missions and views of the Grenfell's travels to other parts of the world (1891-1932).

Colonel Richard Gimbel Collection of Thomas Paine Papers, 1692 - Circa 1921
Title:
Colonel Richard Gimbel Collection of Thomas Paine Papers 1692 - Circa 1921
An important 18th century radical republican theorist and political writer, Thomas Paine was a leading figure in the American Revolution. Despite his humble beginnings and lack of formal education, his reasoned and persuasive writings not only influenced nascent American republican ideology, but profoundly affected the perception of government in England and France as well. His three most influential works are (1776), (1791-1792), and (1794, 1795, 1807). The Richard Gimbel Collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Gimbel (1898-1970) and that most were written by, to, or about the revolutionary Paine. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand, including Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for , his letter of January 10, 1781, in which he takes leave of his former commanding officer, Nathanael Greene, and his January 6, 1789 letter to Kitty Nicholson Few, in which he writes of his view of matrimony and other personal matters. The collection includes a series of correspondence between Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams, which were originally marked "forgeries," these appear instead simply to be the letters of two men bearing famous names. Title:
Frank B. Kellogg papers, 1890-1942 [microform].
Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, background materials, clippings, memorabilia, and other papers of this U.S. senator from Minnesota (1917-1923), ambassador to Great Britain (1923-1925), secretary of state (1925-1929), and judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice (World Court) (1930-1935). Besides reflecting the issues and activities associated with these positions, the papers also provide considerable information about state and national Republican party politics, and about U.S. politics in general. Lesser amounts of material document his organizational memberships and activities, business affairs, career as St. Paul (Minn.) lawyer, and family matters. None of his official dispatches as ambassador or secretary of state are present. Papers from Kellogg's service as ambassador provide information on the European military, diplomatic, social, and economic scene; revision of the schedule of World War I reparations payments by Germany; and the official and social life of an ambassador.
