Butler was an American author.
Butler was born in Ireland, immigrated to the U.S., and joined the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City in 1850.
Butler served three missions to Great Britain for the Mormon Church. When he returned from the first of these in 1856, he accompanied the Ellsworth handcart company to Utah. William was a farmer and lived primarily in Marriott and Kaysville, Utah. He served with Lot Smith and the Utah militia resisting federal forces in 1857-8. Butler had five wives, thirty children, and served time in the Utah territorial prison for bigamy.
William Allen Butler (1825-1902) was an American lawyer and satirical poet.
Biography of Benjamin Franklin Butler
Benjamin Franklin Butler was a lawyer and politician in New York. Born in Columbia County, New York, in 1795, Butler was admitted to the Albany bar in 1817 and became district attorney of Albany County in 1821. He was a member of the New York state legislature from 1827 to 1833 before becoming involved in politics on the federal level. He was U.S. attorney general from 1833 to 1838 and U.S. secretary of war from 1836 to 1837. Butler died in 1858 after a distinguished career.

This collection consists of autobiographies and personal letters. Included are four personal histories of varying lengths. Butler described his visions, business matters, family relationships, church assignments, missions served, and recounted many colorful experiences including hunting down and killing the murderer of one of his children. The letters were written by William Butler and his first wife, Emma Harvey, to their Henry Harvey Butler in 1891-2 while Henry was serving on a mission to the Eastern U.S.

The collection contains letters and autographs of Victorian literay figures; personal and professional correspondence; and miscellaneous papers. Letters and autographs of prominent Victorian literary figures collected by Lang, include, particularly, letters of Matthew Arnold, A. H. Clough, William Rossetti on a Swinburne parody, Charles A. Swinburne on his and Byron's portrayal of Marino Faliero,and Thomas Woolner. Letters from John Nichol to Algernon C. Swinburne discuss a feud with Robert Buchanan. There are also letters or autographs of [Noah?] Brooks, William Allen Butler, Charles Calvert (mentioning producing Henry VIII), Dinah M. Craik, David Gray, Jean Ingelow, and Martin F. Tupper. The collection also contains "The posthumous poetry of Matthew Arnold," a talk given at Oxford by Lang on the Arnold papers in the National Archives of Canada. Letters from Harold Bloom to Lang, 1965 -1968, discuss his colleagues at Yale, academic career, writing, and health. Letters from George P. Elliott and Mary Emma Jeffress Eliott convey personal news with references to the English Dept. and Syracuse University including a sexism case against the English Dept.

The collection also contains a wood engraving of the grey plover by Thomas Bewick used in his "History of British Birds"; a woodcut of "Taking Christ from the Cross" by William Allen Butler used in his "Oberammergau 1890"; and several Chinese woodcuts. Bryce Smith, John Van Alen, John and Thomas Van Buren, and Henry Vanorden. Letters of a personal and business nature from various family members include several from Aaron and John Vanderpoel and Lewis Oakley, his uncles, and from Henry C. Van Schaack, his father-in-law. There are approximately twelve manuscripts of essays and speeches by A.J. Vanderpoel while he attended Kinderhook Academy and New York University, as well as a few by other family members. Various documents including mortgages, deeds, indentures, agreements, and court records relate to Vanderpoel's law practice and to family property.

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
