Typed transcript of reminiscences tell of his numerous journeys, businesses and successes and losses. Tells of his long journey from Virginia to New Orleans to meet with his regiment in time to fight in the Battle of New Orleans. Discusses his numerous business ventures including building a raft to take whiskey to St. Louis to sell using a crew of novice sailors. His business with the lead mines in Galena, Ill. Mentions interactions with Thomas Carlin, a relative of his wife; Governor Reynolds and his request for Phelps to head a regiment in the Black Hawk War; and a conversation with William Hamilton, the son of Alexander Hamilton, that resulted in his buying property in Oregon, Ill. Several stories of interactions with Indians on his frequent journeys. Describes his last visits to Virginia and Tennessee.

Miscellaneous papers accumulated by McCall's during the antebellum stage of his military career. Included are correspondence, dispatches, communications, and other military records related to the Black Hawk War, the 2nd Seminole War, and McCall's service as the Inspector General of the Army in charge of Pacific and Western territorial divisions. Also included are McCall's letters to his father Archibald McCall written during the Seminole War, letters of recommendation and other correspondents regarding McCall's proposed promotion to the rank of Assistant Adjutant General of the Western Division (1838), and a brevet for this service in the Seminole War (1843), and the correspondence related to McCall's resignation from the Army in 1853. Correspondents include John Reynolds, William Jenkins Worth, Samuel Cooper, Edmund P. Gaines, Winfield Scott, William Dayton Lewis, and others. There is also a small group of materials dealing with Indian affairs in Texas and New Mexico territory in 1849-1850: a few pieces of the official correspondence of George Mercer Brooke, the commander of the 8th Military Department, related to the Indian affairs in Texas in 1849-1850, including outrages committed by Indian traders, and a copy of James S. Calhoun's proclamation to the Pueblo Indians with the related correspondence.
