Historian, author, and politician.

John Reynolds was born in Montgomery County, Pa., in 1788, and moved with his parents to Illinois in 1800. He attended college in Knoxville, Tenn., and served as a ranger during the War of 1812. Entering politics, Reynolds served in the Illinois House of Representatives, 1826-30, 1846-48, 1852-54; as governor, 1830-34; and in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1834-37 and 1839-43. Also the author of several volumes on Illinois history and other topics, Reynolds died in Belleville, Ill., in 1865.
