Autograph letters signed from Clement Mansfield Ingleby, Ilford, Essex and elsewhere, to various recipients [manuscript], 1856-1883.
Correspondents: T.F. Dillon Corker, F.G. Fleay, Charles [Edward] Flower, J.H. Friswell, William Heinemann, the mayor [of Stratford-upon-Avon], Samuel Neil, J. Parker Norris, M.W. Rooney, and others. Letters (5), (7), (35) to Fleay express the opinion that the Henslowe Diary had been tampered with, probably by Collier; (11-16) discuss the reasons for assigning a 1605 date to Ben Jonson's letter to the Earl of Salisbury, written while he and Chapman were in prison, presumably for writing Eastward Ho! not Sejanus; (38-39) discuss the sources of Hamlet and the possibility that part of the 1603 quarto may have been written in shorthand. (49-59) to Heinemann discuss his bibliography, Goethes Faust in England und Amerika and suggests additions; (50) states that he believes his "collection of English Fausts unrivalled." (61) to the Mayor [of Stratford-upon-Avon] discusses the possibility of opening Shakespeare's grave which Ingleby favored. (65-117) to Norris discuss the text and interpretation of Shakespeare's works, certain word usages, the works of Shakespeare scholars in England and America, the quarrels within the New Shakspere Society, centering around Furnivall, and their mutual interest in Shakespeare's portraits; (68) gives his reasons for thinking that "the Stratford bust is the best authenticated likeness" of Shakespeare; (82) discusses the authenticity of the death mask; (116) posits the belief that the Collier family will try to saddle Peter Cunningham with Collier's forgeries after his death. (118) to Rooney requests any information he has on the newly discovered copy of the 1603 quarto of Hamlet. Also, 9 letters and 1 postcard to Ingleby, 1878-1883, from The Autotype Co., F.G. Fleay (with a slip by Ingleby attached), F.J. Furnivall, L. Toulmin Smith and S. Timmins; 2 references sent to the Senate of the University of London on behalf of Ingleby, by R.G. Latham and the Birmingham and Midland Institute, January-February 1861; and several newspaper obituaries of Ingleby scattered throughout the correspondence.

Elizabeth Robins Papers, 1803-1963
Title:
Elizabeth Robins Papers 1803-1963
Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952) was an actress, playwright, prolific novelist and suffragist. American born and educated, Robins spent most of her adult life living and working in England, first in London and later in London and Sussex. The nearly one hundred linear feet of materials which comprise the Elizabeth Robins Papers reflect the many facets of Robins' life. The collection includes diaries, photographs, scrapbooks and ephemera, as well as correspondence with a variety of dynamic personalities, and is a resource not only for studying her life and works, but for examining a wide range of family, social, and political issues. The collection provides insight into American and English theater in the late 19th century, English literary circles, and the women's suffrage and feminist movements in England and America, as well as information on gold mining camps in post Civil War Colorado and turn of the century Alaska. Largely because of her long term friendship with Dr. Octavia Wilberforce, there is information on the movement for improved health care for women and children. The correspondence of Raymond Robins, Elizabeth Robins' brother, adds another dimension to the collection. His letters are an excellent source for the study of Chicago political history, the Settlement House Movement, and Progressive Party politics.

Whitall, James, 1888-1954. Papers of James Whitall [manuscript], 11915-1917.
Title:
Papers of James Whitall [manuscript], 11915-1917.
The collection contains the manuscript of an unpublished novel "How literature came to Texas," ca. 1915, written by Whitall under the pseudonym, "Honor Landis." The manuscript contains corrections by George Moore. In addition the collection contains suggestions by Moore on enlivening Chapter 7 of the novel and a contract between Moore and Whitall, 1915 March 24, for the novel's publication. In a series of letters to Whitall, 1915, Moore discusses the novel and their literary collaboration and offers specific advise. He recommends Walter Pater's writing style. In a final letter, 1916 October 10, Whitall expresses disappointment that the novel will not be published and thanks Moore for the insight he has gained. In two additional letters, 1916, 1917, William Heinemann, of Heinemann Publishing House in London, writes to Whitall agreeing to review, and then rejecting, Whitall's manuscript, noting "we are in such appalling straits with regard to paper and other materials for book making that we can only take up things in which we have great confidence."

ALS, 1895 February 1 : [London], to [William] Heinemann.
Shaw advises: "It is not enough for you to cut a slice of life--anyone can do that who can write or imagine at all--you must eat the slice, digest it, & build it up into a living organism. That's the meaning of 'creation' in art." He also says: "Outside the most lighthearted comedy, there must be no happy endings; but there must be great endings, or hopeful, or right endings; but happiness & unhappiness are the positive & negative ends of life only with fools."
