Jervis McEntee became a landscape artist, having studied under F.E. Church. McEntee also developed a lasting friendship with Edwin Booth.
Jervis McEntee (1828-1891) was a landscape painter from New York, N.Y.
Born in Rondout, N.Y.
Jervis McEntee was born in Rondout, New York, July 14, 1828. He had early literary and artistic aspirations and studied under Frederic E. Church, who had himself studied under the Hudson River School master, Thomas Cole. McEntee was to maintain a close relationship with Church for the rest of his life. After an unsuccessful stint as a businessman, McEntee settled in New York in 1857 as one of the charter residents of Richard Morris Hunt's Tenth Street Studio Building. Since many of the other occupants were either bachelors or commuters, and since Mrs. McEntee was a lively, sympathetic hostess, the couple became the center of a spontaneous salon frequented by some of the best-known artists, writers, and actors of the time. After his wife died in 1878, McEntee stayed on, an increasingly neglected widower until his death in 1891.
McEntee was identified with the Hudson River School and an accomplished and sensitive painter of autumnal landscapes. He wrote in 1874, "Perhaps what would mark my work among that of my brother artists is a preference for the soberer phases Nature, the gray days of November and its leafless trees." McEntee stood at the center of the interlocking directorate formed by the National Academy of Design, the Century Club, and the Tenth Street Studio Building. In the latter part of the 19th century, these formed a supreme art establishment whose membership was composed of the old guard American artists, such as McEntee's close friends Eastman Johnson, Sanford Gifford, John Ferguson Weir, Worthington Whittredge, and Church, who were fighting an ultimately futile battle against the encroachment of European influences among both artists and collectors.

Bellows, Eugene Benson, Edwin H. Blashfield, Rosa Bonheur, Adolph W. Bouguereau, Samuel Colman, Clarence Cook, Jasper F. Cropsey, F. O. C. Darley, Charles F. Daubigny, John Durand, Sanford R. Tuckerman, and James McNeill Whistler; five diaries (1871-1882) detailing annual buying trips to Europe; catalogs; clippings; and miscellaneous publications pertaining to the Avery Art Gallery. The travel diaries were written exclusively during the summers of 1871-1882 while in Europe (circa780 pages). Avery visited England, France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, and Italy, visiting galleries and studios, and attending sales in the major cities. In his entries, Avery lists the works that he sees and art he purchases, detailing prices, sizes, and frame requirements. Avery spent most of his time visiting dealers, making shipping arrangements, and commissioning work from a variety of artists. He visited auction houses such as Christie's in London, and "bric a brac shops" where he purchased paintings, as well as furniture, tapestries, and jewelry. He mentions several dealers throughout Europe, especially the P.L. Everard Company and Mr. Boughton in London, and Mr. Van Hinsberg in Belgium. His social engagements included gallery exhibitions, concerts, trips to the opera, and dinners. He describes the French city of Écouen and the Italian countryside vividly. Avery also records his meeting with the Spanish artist Cutazzi, and describes in detail the finery of the Makart studio in Vienna. Throughout the diaries, he corresponds and meets with Mr. Everard, Mr. Boughton, James McNeill Whistler, Vincent Van Gogh, and people he refers to only as Sam and Mary. Avery writes often of his occasional traveling companion, Mr. Lucas. Beginning in 1873, he mentions his wife, letters to her, and gifts that he buys her. At the end of the diary, he lists his accounts during these years.

Franz R. and Kathryn M. Stenzel collection of western American art, 1728-1966
Title:
Franz R. and Kathryn M. Stenzel collection of western American art 1728-1966
The collection, which consists of approximately 1300 works of art, reflects the Stenzels' interest in visual imagery of the American Northwest of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and includes numerous or significant works by James Madison Alden, E. A. Burbank, James Montgomery Flagg, Joseph Kehoe, Hans Kleiber, William Forsyth McIlwraith, James Henry Moser, E. S. Paxson, Lute Pease, Cleveland Rockwell, James Everett Stuart, James Gilchrist Swan, Peter Peterson Toft, Daniel Winter, and Charles Erskine Scott Wood, plus approximately 490 additional works by over 200 artists, as well as many by unidentified artists. The works are executed in a variety of media: oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, pencil drawings, pen-and-ink drawings, engravings, etchings, and lithographs. The collection also includes small groups of associated papers belonging to James Gilchrist Swan, Jervis McEntee, E. S. Paxson, and Lute Pease. There is artwork, correspondence, writings, printed material, photographs, and miscellaneous documents by and about James Gilchrist Swan (1818-1900), an early Pacific Northwest settler, ethnographer and artist. The artwork includes 11 works by Johnny Kit Elswa, Swan's Haida Indian interpreter. Many of Swan's art, correspondence and writings reflect his study of Haida and Makah Indians and the history of the Pacific Northwest. McEntee (1828-1891), a landscape painter and member of the Hudson River School, is represented not by artwork but by correspondence and printed material. His correspondence is with fellow artists George Henry Boughton, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Eastman Johnson, and Worthington Whittredge. E. S. Paxson, a Montana artist of frontiersmen and Native Americans, is represented by artwork, printed material, photographs and portraits, and other papers. Lute Pease (1869-1963), who worked as a reporter in Seattle and Portland, editor of the Pacific Monthly, and as editorial page cartoonist, is represented by artwork, printed material, photographs, and correspondence.

Weir family papers
Title:
Weir family papers
The papers of the prominent New York and Connecticut Weir family of artists measure 0.8 linear feet and date from 1809-circa 1961, with the bulk of the material dating from 1830-1920. The papers are a collection of correspondence and photographs that constitute a small but vivid record of the influence and relationships of this family of Hudson River School, landscape, and miniature painters. Correspondence consists primarily of letters to painter John Ferguson Weir when he was director of the Yale School of Fine Arts, with scattered letters to his daughter Edith Weir (Perry), and a small amount of correspondence of Robert Weir, his daughter Carrie M. Mansfield, son-in-law Lewis William Mansfield, and Julia Bayard. Letters to John F. Weir are from many late-19th century artists, as well as actors, poets, lawyers, scholars, and clergymen, often concerning arrangements for visiting lectures at the school. Photographs are of Robert Walter Weir, Susan Bayard Weir, Julian Alden Weir, and artwork.

Refers to a "brutal" editorial in the Evening Post on an occurrence at the Academy of Music last night. He asks Winter to say a word in the Tribune "for this friend of ours," possibly referring to Edwin Booth. On letterhead of 51 West 10th Street, New York.
