The Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939) was a conflict between the newly-elected left-leaning government of the Spanish Republic and its supporters and the (ultimately successful) rebellion against the Republic led by General Francisco Franco and supported by Hitler and Mussolini. Thousands of men and women from around the world volunteered to serve as soldiers and medical and support personnel for the Republic, which organized them into International Brigades (including the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, made up of North Americans). Film was one of the weapons used by international organizations supporting the Republic and the Brigades to document the war and to generate support and raise money; after the war they used moving images to aid the Republic’s refugees.
“With the Lincoln Brigade In Spain,” is a short documentary film produced by Herbert Kline, directed by still photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, and shot in 35mm (although distributed in 16 mm) by Cartier-Bresson and movie camera operator Jaques Lemare. It was filmed in 1937 and released in 1938. Shown in union halls, clubs, and other small venues throughout the United States, “With the Lincoln Brigade in Spain” was used to raise funds to bring the Brigaders home.

Benjamin Ivry collection of correspondence on Pavel Tchelitchew, 1981-1982.
Twenty-seven letters and postcards by various authors to Benjamin Ivry. The letters document Ivry's research for a planned catalogue raisonné of Tchelitchew's paintings. Most of the correspondents are collectors who owned Tchelitchew's paintings. The letters discuss the location and history of particular works as well as the correspondents' recollections of Tchelitchew. One letter, from Allen Tanner, discusses his and Tchelitchew's relationships with Gertrude Stein and Bravig Imbs in Paris in the 1920s.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Deptartment of Education. Department of education, exhibition files, 1970-2003.
Title:
Department of education, exhibition files, 1970-2003.
The exhibition files document the work of the Department of Education in the planning and implementation of exhibitions from 1970 to 2003. The files include correspondence, proposals, contracts, research, publicity, grants, and creative works illustrating the educational components of museum exhibitions, which include special lectures, symposia, workshops, musical and performing arts events, printed and recorded guides, audio-visual shows, and complementary educational exhibitions. These records also reflect the department's responsibility for exhibition brochures and wall labels through various drafts of copy, galleys, and label books. The finished brochures, printed flyers, and announcement inserts have been placed in Series 13, Ephemera, although duplicates are occasionally included in these files. Ongoing programs held in conjunction with exhibitions, however-such as the Shartle Symposia, Evenings for Educators, or Family Days- are contained within the appropriate program series rather than the Exhibition Files. The amount of documentation varies with each exhibition, ranging from single-sheet listings of educational components for February 1981-April 1982 to multiple files regarding one exhibition. Information on exhibitions held during the 1970s is sparse. Typically, an exhibition file unit begins with General Program Information, including program listings, proposals, budgets, announcements, and bibliographies. Correspondence further reflects the planning and implementation of the programs. Substantial amounts of records on a specific component are given their own file. Exhibitions with extensive documentation include Money Matters: A Critical Look at Bank Architecture (2/4/1990-4/15/1990); The Pen and The Sword: Winslow Homer, Thomas Nast and the American Civil War (8/4/1990-2/4/1991); Rediscovering Pompeii (11/11/1990-1/27/1991); The Sculpture of Indonesia (12/9/1990-3/17/1991); Martin Luther King (two exhibits) (12/9/1990-3/17/1991 and 2/12/1991-7/7/1991); and Leonardo da Vinci: The Anatomical Drawings (6/28/1992-9/6/1992).

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Office of the Director. James Johnson Sweeney subject files, 1961-1968.
Title:
James Johnson Sweeney subject files, 1961-1968.
The Subject Files illustrate Sweeney's active role as a juror and guest curator for international exhibitions held outside the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, specifically, the 1961 Bienal de Sao Paulo (Brazil) and the 1963 Irish Exhibition of Living Art (Dublin). A prominent subject is the 1967 exhibition ROSC, The Poetry of Vision (Dublin), for which Sweeney served as chairman of a jury completed by Willem Sandberg and Jean Leymarie. The papers include correspondence with his fellow jurors as well as with artists (Alberto Burri, Pierre Soulages, Pierre Alechinsky, and Joan Miro) who contributed to the exhibition. In addition the papers document Sweeney's role as guest curator for the 1962 exhibition of sculptures and mobiles by Alexander Calder held at the Tate Gallery in London. There are numerous letters from Calder which include sketches, his suggestions as to which works were to be included in the Tate exhibition and how they were to be shown, and discussion of new works in progress. The Subject Files also contain materials related to the Tamarind Lithography Workshop (Los Angeles), including correspondence between Sweeney and Director June Wayne; copies of correspondence between Wayne and Jean Dubuffet concerning the latter's much-publicized refusal of a Tamarind award in August 1965; and copies of minutes of the annual meeting of Tamarind's Board of Directors (1961-1967).

Hugh Kenner Papers
Title:
Hugh Kenner Papers
Correspondence, offprints, clippings, typescripts, galley proofs, photographs, tearsheets, drawings, computer printouts and program sheets, holograph notes and drafts, notebooks, and academic papers document Hugh Kenner's career as critic, scholar, and educator. Subject Files is the largest of the three series, constituting one half of the Kenner papers. It includes a large number of papers and articles by colleagues of Kenner and topical files on individuals and subjects related to Kenner's academic interests. Some of the largest files document Samuel Beckett, T.S. Eliot, Buckminster Fuller, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. The Works series contains various drafts, contracts, and correspondence for books, articles, lectures, reviews, and introductions by Kenner. The smallest series, Correspondence, largely comprises incoming letters to Kenner. Incoming correspondence and third-party correspondence is located throughout the papers. The bulk of the papers date from the late 1940s to the early 1990s. A very few items date as early as 1916, but these are generally photo reproductions of items or copies of letters.

Charles Henri Ford Papers, 1928-1981.
The Charles Henri Ford papers consist of typescript and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, postcards, clippings, photographs, financial documents, contracts, invitations, page proofs, prospectuses, journals, and diaries. His published work includes a typescript fragment of ABC'S and typescripts of THE HALF-THOUGHTS, THE DISTANCES OF PAIN, OM KRISHNA I: SPECIAL EFFECTS, THE OVERTURNED LAKE, SLEEP IN A NEST OF FLAMES, and THE YOUNG AND EVIL. Ford's unpublished work includes typescripts of "The Acts," "Confessions of a Freak," "Denmark Vesey," "I Will Be What I Am," "The Labyrinth," "Let's Get Out of Here," "The Poet," "A Record of Myself," "Thirty Variations," "Unhappy Train," and "A World of Women." There is material from an unpublished issue of View, devoted to theater. The Correspondence series includes both outgoing and incoming correspondence. Burroughs, Jean Cocteau, Joseph Cornell, Leonardo Cremonini, E.E. Cummings, Leonor Fini, Gertrude Ford, Ruth Ford, Allen Ginsberg, Ted Joans, Ray Johnson, Philip Lamantia, James Laughlin, Mary McCarthy, Gerard Malanga, Carmen Marino, Henry Miller, Marianne Moore, Edouard Roditi, Dame Edith Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, Allen Tate, Pavel Tchelitchew, Parker Tyler, Carl Van Vechten, William Carlos Williams, Donald Windham, Bill Wolak, Kathleen Tankersley Young, and Stark Young. The Journals/Diaries series consists almost exclusively of the journals and diaries of Ford from 1932 until 1967, with a few lacunae in the chronological coverage. They chronicle the literary and artistic communities in New York City and Paris and Ford's own creative ambitions and endeavors. Among the important figures mentioned are Kenneth Anger, W.H. Auden, George Balanchine, Djuna Barnes, Cecil Beaton, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, John Cage, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jean Cocteau, Merce Cunningham, Isak Dinesen, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Jean Genet, Peggy Guggenheim, Lincoln Kirstein, Mary McCarthy, Gerard Malanga, Ned Rorem, Edith and Osbert Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Yves Tanguy, Allen Tate, Parker Tyler, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, William Carlos Williams, and Stark Young. Ford records his struggles to force himself to work, the difficulties of finding publishers for his work, his experiences in publishing Blues and View, his experimentation in the visual arts, surrealism in the arts, and playwriting. He also chronicles his experiences while living abroad and in the United States, including impressions of Paris, Athens and the Greek islands, Rome and other cities in Italy, New York City, and the American South. There is frank discussion of homosexuality and the experiences of a gay man in the twentieth century. A later accession includes typescript poems by the poets Ronnie Burk and Bill Wolak.

Robert Schoelkopf Gallery records
Title:
Robert Schoelkopf Gallery records
The records of the Robert Schoelkopf Gallery comprise 29 linear feet of material from 1851 to 1991, with some items predating the founding of the gallery. The bulk of the records date from 1962 to 1991, providing researchers with fairly comprehensive coverage of the gallery's development and operations from its inception in 1962 until its closure in 1991. Items dated prior to 1962 relate principally to the period of transition during which Robert Schoelkopf ended his partnership with the Zabriskie Gallery and established his own business. There are also some items relating to artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The collection consists primarily of artist files documenting relations with contemporary artists, representation of deceased artists, and other works of art handled by the gallery. It also chronicles the gallery's exhibition schedule and the day-to-day administration of the business. The types of material that can be found here include correspondence, exhibition inventories, price lists, accounting and consignment records, shipping and insurance records, printed material, and photographs. The collection is a valuable source of information on twentieth-century American art history, focusing primarily on early-twentieth-century modernists as well as an important group of American realist painters and sculptors from the latter half of the century. The collection illuminates, in detail, the developing market for these schools and, in the case of the latter group, provides personal insights from artists on the realist perspective. The records also document the Robert Schoelkopf Gallery's significant contribution to the resurgence of interest in fine art photography during the 1960s and 1970s as reflected in an increase in the value of works by important American photographers such as Walker Evans.Much of the outgoing correspondence from the gallery consists of copies of letters written by Robert Schoelkopf, with additional business being handled by assistant staff and, from the mid-1970s, Schoelkopf's wife, Laura Jane Schoelkopf. The records offer insight into the personalities of the Schoelkopfs and how their congenial and candid management style influenced their relationships with the contemporary artists they represented.
