Letters of Dr. and Mrs. Taylor describe local life and customs, daily routine in the missionary compound and activities at St. James Hospital as well as political and military events in Anking that affected their work, particularly the Revolution of 1911 and Dr. Taylor's assistance in the escape of the imperial governor from Anking. Also the "People's Revolution" of 1927; Chinese internal troubles and fighting between Nationalists and Communists in the 1930s; the Japanese conquest; and the Communist occupation in 1949. There are also letters from their daughter in college in the U.S. and Scotland, and from an Episcopal missionary in the Philippines. Related material includes various diaries, scrapbook and medical case records kept in China; papers and talks about China; manuscripts of memoirs by Dr. Taylor and Emeline Bowne; a Chinese manuscript by Tze-liang Liu "Seventy four types of Miao people"; photographs of the Taylors; postcards and other memorabilia; and newsletters and pamphlets re missionary work in Anking. Letters of John S. Mosby to Eben Swift and Marcus J. Macready to Mary Russell Mitford on publishing her play and his performance in "Julian"; Richard Kidder Meade to Samuel Pickens on the sale of Alabama land; James Montgomery sending thanks for a musical composition; Samuel McDowell Moore to John Letcher, 1861 September 3, on poor condition of roads which will hinder army transport and volunteering to supervise repair if given supplies and slave labor. Robert Nares to Thomas Cadell the Younger and reply on proofs for the completion of Macklin's Bible, together with engraving of Nares; and Yoné Noguchi to Madison Cawein on an evening with Joaquin Miller. The collection also contains an autograph of Joaquin Miller; a fragment by James Monroe on the acquisition of Florida.

Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

This collection contains one hundred ninety two cartes-de-visite photographs of officers who served in the Confederate army. The majority of the officers served as either major generals or brigadier generals in the Confederate forces. The collection includes the photographs of many lesser known officers, as well as the famous; such as Lee, Beauregard, Morgan, Jackson, and Stuart. The collection also includes photos of past American presidents and European royalty. Acid free photocopies have been placed in the original photograph album and the originals are in a separate container. Both copies have the subject's name on it. The cartes-de-visites were taken by photographers in Mobile, Nashville, and New York; and are roughly two by five inches.

The Germantown left Norfolk, Va., for Ceylon, China, Hong Kong, India, Macao, Madeira, the Philippine Islands, Singapore, and South Africa. On its second voyage, the Germantown traveled from the Philippine Islands to China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, St. Helena, and South Africa. Also included is a C.S.A. Army District of the Gulf telegraph book (12 March - 8 August 1864) kept at Fort Morgan, Mobile Bay, Ala., with messages sent and received by Page with Jefferson Davis, George G. Garner, Edward Higgins, Dabney Herndon Maury, and others, and telegrams (1864) from Garner, Higgins, and Maury.
