Joint resolutions of the general assemblies of Maryland and Virginia provided for a survey of the Potomac River and examination of the Potomac Company. A report of the joint finding was made to the Virginia Assembly January 15, 1823. March 30, 1831, the General Assembly directed a survey of the southern branch of the Potomac be made to report on the practicality and expediency of its improvement by canal, locks, dam, etc.
