Collection primarily relates to Pickens' work as NAACP Field Secretary and Director of Branches, and contains a great deal of correspondence with NAACP officials. Of interest is material chronicling Pickens' and the NAACP's involvement in the Scottsboro Case in Alabama. Correspondents relating to the NAACP include James Weldon Johnson, Walter Francis White, Mary White Ovington, Arthur B. Spingarn, Joel E. Spingarn, Roy Wilkins, Thurgood Marshall, and W.E.B. Du Bois. Other correspondence is between Pickens and friends, acquaintances, fellow scholars, and business associates. There is correspondence with many organizations with which Pickens was involved, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, League for Industrial Democracy, Socialist Party of America, National Council of the Young Men's and Women's Christian Association, American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign Born, and the Council for Pan American Democracy. Correspondents include Claude A. Barnett and Percival L. Prattis of the Associated Negro Press, and other individuals in government, education, and church affairs, among them John Haynes Holmes of the Community Church of New York. Writings are primarily composed of typescripts (manuscripts and editorials), speeches, and mimeographed Associated Negro Press columns and newspaper clippings of articles and editorials written by Pickens. Subjects dealt with in these different formats cover a wide range and serve to reveal Pickens' broad interests and intellectual scope.

The collection contains correspondence, speeches, articles, statements, reports, brochures, and newspaper clippings related to the 1929 and 1930 meetings of the Durham Fact-Finding Conference and to two subsequent conferences that grew out of the Fact-Finding Conference: the 1942 Southern Conference on Race Relations and the 1944 Durham Race Relations Conference. Correspondents in letters addressed to the conferences' chair and college president, James E. Shepard, represent a wide array of African American colleges and universities, businesses, press, and organizations such as the NAACP, the Associated Negro Press, and the Federal Council of Churches. Notable correspondents include W.E.B. DuBois, Hugo L. Black, Frank Porter Graham, Charles S. Johnson, Walter White, William Hastie, Langston Hughes, A. Phillip Randolph, E. Franklin Frazier, Alain Locke, P.B. Young, Gordon B. Hancock, Claude A. Barnett, and George E. Haynes. Materials in this file unit pertain to the employment of blacks in defense industries, the low morale of black citizens, discrimination, racial violence and lynching, entertainment of black troops, the Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC), and agitation of black leaders for equal rights and representation on Federal Government policymaking boards.

Title: St. Clair Drake papers, 1935-1990.

Divided into 18 series and spanning the years 1935 to 1990, the collection documents Drake's career as an educator and social anthropologist in the United States, Liberia, Great Britain and Ghana, and consists for the most part of correspondence, writings, office files and research materials. Research materials in the collection include a series of interviews and records of participants-observers in a survey of churches and voluntary associations in New Orleans, gathered by students and research assistants at Dillard University under the direction of Allison Davis and Drake in 1937; interview material, participant-observer records and printed matter on race relations and community life in Chicago; writings, field notes and documents of black social service organizations relating to black life in the British Isles; and correspondence, curriculum material, research notes, office files and printed matter related to education and social life in Ghana and the development of a new town and modern harbor in the old fishing village of Tema. Smaller bodies of material relate to Liberia, Kenya, Somalia, India, the U.S. Peace Corps in Africa, and to a survey of mass communications in tropical Africa.
