Collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings. photographs and other papers relating mainly to the National Plowing Match and Field Day (1946-1950), pasture improvement and conservation projects, corn and soybean test yields and the extension service of the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, for which Barnett served as District Conservationist in Des Moines and as Work Unit Conservationist in David County, Iowa. Also included are correspondence with Herb Plambeck, farm director of radio station WHO (Des Moines) and a sound color film of 1946 National Plowing Match and Field Day.

He began his professional career in agriculture as a USDA county extension worker, but soon became farm editor for the Davenport (Iowa) Times-Democrat.
