American army officer.
Born in Greenfield, Mass., Charles Pomeroy Stone graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and served in the Mexican-American War under General Winfield Scott. During the U.S. Civil War he commanded a brigade in General Robert Patterson's Army of the Shenandoah in the First Bull Run campaign. After a portion of his command was defeated in the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Stone was incarcerated for 189 days at Fort Lafayette and Fort Hamilton under suspicion of disloyalty and treason. Following his release Stone was ordered to the Department of the Gulf, where he served as a member of the surrender commission at Port Hudson and in the Red River Campaign as General Nathaniel P. Banks's chief of staff. After the war he served for 13 years as chief of staff and general aide-de-camp for the Khedive Isma'il Pasha in the Egyptian Army. Stone's first wife was Maria Clary, who died shortly after Stone's release from Fort Hamilton. While serving in New Orleans, La., in 1863, Stone married a distant relation, Jeanne Stone.

Maurice Hugh Farrier Papers, 1876-1991
Title:
Maurice Hugh Farrier Papers 1876-1991
The Maurice Hugh Farrier Papers includes personal and professional correspondence, entomology research materials, and a reprint collection of articles and works by internationally acclaimed scientists writing on mites and other insects. The collection chiefly documents Farrier's research and professional activities during his tenure as a professor of Entomology and Forestry in the departments of Entomology and Forestry at North Carolina State University. One of Farrier's main subjects of research was the Veigaiidae (Acarina). In March 1957 he published which is included in this collection, as is (December, 1969). Farrier also wrote numerous articles for scholarly journals, news columns in various North Carolina newspapers, and other works. The bulk of the collection consists of a comprehensive compilation of original publications, reprints, and annotated photocopies of articles on mites written by scientists from all over the world. Farrier and his student Michael K. Hennessey used these articles to compile and publish (1993), a taxonomic index on mites. Farrier and Hennessey also co-authored (1988) and (1989). A Revision of the Veigaiidae (Acarina), Mites of the Superfamily Parasitoidea (Acarina: Mesostigmata) Associated with Dendroctonus and Ips (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Soil-Inhabiting and Free-Living Mesostigmata (Acari-Parasitiformes) from North America: an Annotated Checklist and Bibliography and Index Systematic Revision of Thirty Species of Free-Living, Soil-Inhabiting Gamasine Mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) of North America Mites of the Family Parasitidae (Acari: Mesostigmata) Inhabiting Forest Soils of North and South Carolina Maurice Hugh Farrier received a B.S. in Zoology and Entomology in 1948 and a Masters degree in Entomology in 1950, both from Iowa State College. Farrier subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Entomology from North Carolina State College (University) in 1955. That same year, he was appointed Assistant Professor at North Carolina State in the Department of Entomology. In 1960, Farrier was promoted to Associate Professor of Entomology, and in 1961, he became Associate Professor of Entomology and Forestry. In 1971, Farrier was promoted to full professor. He retired in 1991.

Hayward's observations on sanitary conditions of camps, medical care, and hospitals include criticism of the lack of equipment and professional support for surgeons. Hayward also noted the conduct of the war by the officer corps, addressing the alleged treason of Charles Pomeroy Stone, the military failures of Joseph Hooker, and his confidence in George McClellan.

In his letters of 1860, Jocknick talks about his attempt to find work in New Jersey, the news of the upcoming war, and secession, the possibility of enlisting in the army, Abraham Lincoln, James G. Bennett and Nehemiah Perry. In his letters from 1861 to 1865, Jocknick talks about the impending war, his decision to enlist, William H. Seward, John C. Ten Eyck, Nathaniel Banks, and the election of Abraham Lincoln; he also talks about his enlistment in the 3rd Regiment of New York Cavalry under James Van Alen and John Mix. Butler, August V. Kautz, G. T. Beauregard, George Mead, and Winfield Scott Hancock. Jocknick also mentions the Emancipation Proclamation and his fellow soldiers' reaction to it which were mostly negative. After the war, Jocknick began working as a clerk at the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. In his letters from this time (1865-1876) he talks about his job and duties as well as James Harlan and President Andrew Johnson. He also talks about the presidential election of Ulysses S. Grant, and the possibility of William Tecumseh Sherman running for president. In his letters after 1876, May 2, Jocknick is living in Ouray County, Colorado as a farmer and talks about his life in the West as well as the Ute Indians, land and possible gold and silver mines. There is one letter by Jocknick in 1886 (written from San Diego) to the Pension Bureau. It includes three items regarding his pension. The last item in the collection is an incomplete letter by Jocknick's son Clifton to his brother Sidney Jocknick. In this letter (written circa 1922) Clifton talks about living in Southern California, and real estate prices and problems in Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
