Romanov collection, 1894-1935, 1907-1918
Title:
Romanov collection 1894-1935 1907-1918
The collection consists of letters, photographs, artwork, and autographs by or pertaining to the imperial family. Most of the correspondence is from members of the Russian imperial family to their friends Anna Vyrubova and Lili Dehn, and chiefly concerns details of everyday existence in captivity at T︠S︡arskoe Selo (T︠S︡arskoselʹskiĭ dvoret︠s︡), Tobol'sk, and Ekaterinburg, and news about mutual friends, with little specific reference to historical events. There are also a few letters to the Romanovs or third parties from members of the imperial entourage, including Grigori Rasputin. The six albums of family photographs (1908-1915) and accompanying loose photographs consist mainly of snapshots of the family's leisure activities and individual and group portraits. These are accompanied by an autograph album and a few pieces of artwork.

Post, Catherine, 1899-. Catherine Post Collection, 1900-1986.
Title:
Catherine Post Collection, 1900-1986.
The collection consists of manuscripts, photographs, original watercolors, clippings and printed materials. The collection primarily concerns Ms. Post's family in Russia before the Revolution and in the emigration in France and the U.S.A. and to Boris Bakhmeteff who was the ambassador of the Russian provisional government to the United States, later chairman of the Lyon Match company in Long Island City where Ms. Post worked for many years. Materials relating to Boris Bakhmeteff include photographs of his family in Tbilisi, photographs of the opening of the Russian embassy in Washington D.C. in 1917 and a large file of obituaries. Memorabilia of Ms. Post's family begin chronologically with photographs of her grandfather, Nikolaĭ Fedorovich Bekker. Bekker's daughter Vera was an accomplished amateur artist and examples of her original water colors and poems are included, along with reproductions of paintings by her husband Iosif Krachkovskiĭ who was a popular Petersburg society painter around the turn of the century. Their son, Dmitriĭ Krachkovskiĭ wrote under the pen name Klenovskiĭ and was a popular poet in the emigration who published many books of verse, some of which are included in the collection. Also included is Klenovskiĭ's bound manuscript entitled "Stihotvorennii︠a︡", his autograph poems, photocopies of manuscripts, photographs and clippings. Nikolaĭ Bekker's son Nicolas Becker (de Becquère) was a successful artist both in St. Petersburg and on the French Riviera where he painted portraits of the European aristocracy. Reproductions of his paintings are included along with manuscripts of his poems, and miscellaneous biographical information. Materials not relating to the Bakhmeteff or Bekker families include the typescript memoirs of a self-taught Russian peasant named Alekseĭ Savisko who moved to the U.S.A. in 1957 and became a farmer in Maine. The memoirs entitled "Otvet khuliteliam proshlogo Rossii" (In Answer to the Degraders of Russia) describe his family and work on farms and factories in the Ukraine before the Revolution. Savisko defends the tsarist government against its critics and praises its treatment of peasants and workers. Miscellaneous items include a photograph of Nicholas II inspecting the Viborg Regiment, an embroidered collar from the Obshchestovo Pooshchrenii︠a︡ kustarnoĭ promyshlenosti (Home Craft Art Industry) in St. Petersburg, an anonymous watercolor stage design, a small collection of Russian postcards, and examples of Russian currency from the tsarist and provisional governments.

Title:
Photograph albums, 1893, 1896.
Both photograph albums include some dated photographs, from 1893 through 1896, as well as undated photographs, probably from the same period glued onto pages. Both albums consist of loose pages of various size photographs, and a few newspaper and magazine clippings. Some of the photographs have come unglued from the pages. Both volumes have very loose, identical soft leather covers. V. 1 includes 17 pp. of photographs, notably the 1893-1894 Shakespeare Club, several of Old Mission (Mich.), one of Round Lake (Mich.), three consecutive photographs of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows parade on May 6, 1896, several photographs of a cat, and one each of a lightning storm, of the schooner Seaman at Marion Island, which was towed to Traverse City, 1895, and of the inside of an unidentified mine. V. 2 includes 14 pp. of photographs including groups of men and women in theatrical costumes, and one photograph each of William S. Hart of the Traverse City Opera House, the Milliken cottage, which traveled to the 1893 World's Fair, a fake "spiritual" photograph of Ray Wait with superimposed images of two robed women, of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra, shortly after they married, and several photographs of Fort Mackinac (Mich.), as well as the funeral note of C. A. Crawford, 1893, from a newspaper. However, both volumes consist mainly of photographs of interior and exterior views of buildings, farms, boats, and landscapes located in or around Traverse City (Mich.), including, in V. 1 the Bunkman and Pratt residences, and the S. E. Wait Drug Store, and in V. 2, the Hannah Lay flour mill. Inside v. 1 is a small label which reads "Minnie B. Wait, Traverse City, Michigan."

The George Nathaniel Nash Papers consist of a diary with entries dated from 17 January 1917 to 10 December 1919, a scrapbook of items illustrating events in the diary, and a photograph album, all documenting Nash's experiences in Russia as a British officer during World War I and after. Nash's papers contain first-hand accounts or primary documentation of a number of important events relating to World War I and to the Russian Revolution: the Conference of the Allies in Petrograd, conditions at the Russian southwestern front in 1917, events in Petrograd in March and April of that year, the ceremonies for the burial of victims of the revolution in Petrograd in April 1917, the retreat of Kerensky's forces in the June Offensive, events on the Turkish front in 1918, and conditions in Moscow in early 1919. Nash reports on his audiences with both Tsar Nicholas II and his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. He frequently depicts the difficult lives of ordinary people in Petrograd, Moscow, and the Caucasus region. He also describes prison life in Moscow and reports stories from Russians he met who had been imprisoned under the tsar.
