Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Ernst von, 1846-1909
Variant namesErnst von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was the son of Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Albertine; composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was his uncle. He became partner of the banking house Mendelssohn & Co.; after the death of his father, he took control of the bank with Franz von Mendelssohn in 1871. The bank rose to become one of the most important European private banks.
Wilhelm II elevated Mendelssohn-Bartholdy to the nobility in 1896. In 1902 he was appointed a member of the Prussian House of Lords.
