The best-selling novelist, Lion Feuchtwanger, fled Germany in 1933 with the rise of the National Socialists. Living first in exile in France (1933-1940), Feuchtwanger and his wife, Marta, ultimately emigrated to the United States in 1940, coming to Los Angeles in 1941. Lion Feuchtwanger is perhaps best known for his historical novel, Jud Süss (1925; Jew Suess), and his novel Erfolg (1930; Success), the first novel that predicts the reign of terror of National Socialism. Lion Feuchtwanger lived in Pacific Palisades (CA) until his death in 1958.
Author.
The conductor Ernst Römer was an acquaintance of Feuchtwanger's who asked Feuchtwanger to vouch for him in his attempt to correspond with Alma Mahler; Kurt Rosenfeld sought from Werfel endorsement of a letter to be presented at the German American Emergency Conference in 1942 and which was signed by Feuchtwanger, among others; Marta Feuchtwanger was Lion Feuchtwanger's wife.
Author Lion Feuchtwanger was born in Munich, and educated in Berlin and Munich. Eschewing the family margarine business for a life in literature, he accepted a job as drama critic for Die Schaubuehne. He began writing plays, and became known for addressing social issues in his works. Many of his novels were critical of the Nazi Party, who revoked his citizenship; he was compelled to flee Germany for France, and, ultimately, the United States, where he wrote mainly entertaining and well-researched historical novels. His early work shows an important social consciousness, and his later work tries to impart his view of human nature.

Title:
Stefan Lorant collection, ca. 1869-1993 (bulk 1920-1992).
The Lorant collection represents significant aspects of Lorant's careers as filmmaker and pictorial history book author; his better known expertise as a picture magazine editor is less thoroughly documented. The core of the collection comprises photographs he collected of German history from the Bismarck era to the Nuremberg Trials (ca. 1871-1946). A smaller portion of the photo holdings consists of stills from Lorant's silent films and personal photos of himself, friends, and family. An extensive correspondence from his American years is primarily concerned with book projects.

Title:
Ludwig Lewisohn papers, 1903-1980s (bulk 1940s).
Papers document mostly Lewisohn's friendship and early homosexual love affair with poet George Sylvester Viereck and Lewisohn's later marriage to Edna Manley. Correspondence (1903-1955) between Lewisohn and Viereck is mostly on literary matters; but early holograph poems by Lewisohn refer to their love affair. Other poems include printed and typescript copies and his English translations of some poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Most of the collection documents the relationship of Lewisohn and Edna Manley, with mostly photocopies of her diaries (ca. 1940-1942) which describe her relationship with Lewisohn, her perceptions of him, the custody battle for his son James, his memories of many people and parts of his life, exiled Jewish and other writers fleeing Europe, and other subjects. Present are photocopies of correspondence (1936-1940) regarding the financial arrangements of Lewisohn's divorce from his first wife Mary Childs Lewisohn (who published books under the pseudonym Bosworth Crocker.) Other literary manuscripts include poems by Lewisohn set to music by Thelma Spear and an unknown composer; and photocopies of an unpublished novel and play by Edna Manley, as well as clippings of her newspaper columns (1934-1936) for a Rochester, NY, newspaper. Lewisohn printed matter includes an inscribed offprint (1904) of his article on the poetry of George Sylvester Viereck, and brochures advertising his lecture tours and his biography of Goethe. Photographs of Ludwig, James, and Edna Manley Lewisohn and many of her friends and family, including two photographs (ca. 1940s) of Henry Miller and his family at Big Sur. Also included is an audiocassette of a lecture by Lewisohn and materials (1992) from a College of Charleston exhibit on Lewisohn.

The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and ephemera regarding the lives and work of many German-speaking emigre artists in Southern California. One focus of the collection are German Expressionist Theater director Leopold Jessner (1878-1945) and his brother-in-law, the actor and director Fritz Jessner (1889-1946), both of whom left Germany in the 1930s to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews. The collection also includes more extensive materials on Walter Wicclair, director William Dieterle, art-director Rudi Feld, Felix Jackson, the Mann family, Lion Feuchtwanger, and Elow as well as about the Jewish Club of 1933. Furthermore it contains transcripts of various conferences on exile studies, articles, presentations, interview transcripts, Wim Wenders screenplays, and data sheets Marta Mierendorff created about various exiled German-speaking artists. The materials were collected by Marta Mierendorff (b. 1911), who was made Emeritus Research Professor in 1984 at USC.

It also includes rental materials and some arrangements by other composers. Briefly stated, all music materials for the works of Weill other than those offered for sale by publishers are included, whether in score or parts, as long as they present his music without fundamentally altering its character. (For more details on inclusion/exclusion, see the record for the whole series--"Music sources for the works of Kurt Weill ...," ID NYWS94-A2.) Materials on Petroleuminseln include the following: a photocopy of the autograph vocal score of one song, Das Lied von den braunen Inseln.

Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, ca. 1938-1964.
The correspondence includes a copy of a letter addressed to the German people ("Aufruf an das deutsche Volk"), endorsed by Heinrich Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, and Bertolt Brecht. Dr. Kurt Rosenfeld sought Werfel's endorsement of the letter, which Rosenfeld intended to submit at the German American Emergency Conference to be held in March 1942; Werfel responded directly to Feuchtwanger, explaining in detail his difficulties with the letter's formulations. A carbon copy of a form letter from Werfel reflects a group effort on the part of German and Austrian exile writers meeting at the house of Lion Feuchtwanger; the letter makes mention of emergency contracts having been extended to some exile writers in Hollywood and having now expired, and solicits funds for the further support of several writers. The telegram sent jointly by Lion and Marta Feuchtwanger offers condolences upon the death of Franz Werfel; the 2 letters from Marta Feuchtwanger are birthday wishes to Alma Mahler, in 1959 and 1964, and recall with gratitude assistance Alma had extended to the Feuchtwangers during the Nazi era, around 1940. In a letter of 1941 Lion Feuchtwanger writes to Alma Mahler on behalf of Ernst Römer, who was endeavoring to perform one of Gustav Mahler's symphonies in Mexico; Feuchtwanger includes a transcript of Römer's letter to him.
