Arnold Zweig was born in Prussia, was raised in Germany, and lived for a time in Palestine. His novels and plays, with themes of injustice and anti-war, were popular in the former German Democratic Republic. He returned to Germany from the Middle East after World War II and found a new audience in East Germany.

Zweig fled Germany in 1933, going first to Czechoslovakia, then to Switzerland and France, and emigrated to Palestine sometime in the same year. In 1948 he returned to East Germany.
