Berthier, prince de Neuchâtel, was Marshall of France and Chief of Staff under Napoleon. Caffarelli was a French General and minister of War for the Kingdom of Italy.
Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), one of the four sons of Jean-Baptiste Berthier, was born in Versailles, where his father was in charge of the Royal Map Service. He entered the army as a young man; in 1777, at the age of twenty-four, he attained the rank of captain. In 1780 he asked to be assigned to Rochambeau's army which was preparing to leave for America, and was offered a place on the staff of Count de Saint-Maisme who commanded the Soissonais regiment. Through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings (related in the journal in the Princeton Library), Berthier did not leave with Rochambeau's army when it sailed from Brest in May 1780, but proceeded to America via the West Indies and finally joined up with the army at Newport, Rhode Island, on September 30, 1780.
In January 1781, Captain Berthier was assigned to the staff of General Rochambeau, as "aide maréchal général des logis surnuméraire." In this capacity he accompanied the army in 1781 on its march to Yorktown, and in 1782 on its return march to Boston, and thence to the West Indies, before returning to France. In all, Berthier was in the United States from September 30, 1780, until December 24, 1782.
After his return to France, Berthier was sent on a military mission to Prussia in 1783. (The Journal of this mission is among the manuscripts at Princeton.) He continued to be employed in staff posts, and to earn regular promotions. When the French Revolution came he again saw active service in the field. In 1796 he accompanied General Bonaparte in the Italian campaign, as chief of staff of the army. Henceforth, his fortunes were linked to those of Bonaparte. Berthier participated in the coup d'état of the 18th Brumaire (1799) which established the Consulate, and received the post of Minister of War. Soon after Bonaparte became Emperor Napolean I, in 1804, he chose Berthier as one of the eighteen army officers to be named Marshal of the Empire. Subsequently, Berthier acquired other titles: Duke of Valangin, Price of Neufchâtel, Prince of Wagram. Marshal Berthier was with Napolean in the campaigns of Austerlitz, Jena, and Friedland; he was in the Peninsular Campaign (1808), the Austrian Campaign (1809), in Russia (1812), Germany (1813), and France (1814). In 1814 he abandoned Napoleon, and died the following year, on June 1, 1815, at Bamberg.

Rosengarten, J. G. (Joseph George), 1835-1921. General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Title:
General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Two printed articles by J. G. Rosengarten, General Comte de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau (both published in 1895), bound together in an extra-illustrated volume, with a title page reading: General Count de Rochambeau and The Chateau de Rochambeau (Philadelphia: G. L. Fitzgerald & Co., 1895). The volume contains an original letter from Charles J. Stillé (dated 28 December 1892); 51 print portraits; 4 other illustrations (2 depictions of the surrender at Yorktown in 1781; a view on the Hudson; and the State House in Philadelphia in 1778); and 3 regional maps (Philadelphia; Baltimore; and New York). Most of the items, including the leaves of the articles, are inlaid. The first article is from the American Historical Register (vol. 3, no. 14, October 1895, p. [195]-208, with a different portrait substituted on the first page); and the second is a reprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (vol. 33, no. 146, January 16, 1895, p. 353-361). Stillé's letter concerns Rosengarten's translation from Max von Eelking (The German allied troops in the North American war of independence). Of the portraits, 5 are of Rochambeau; 5 of George Washington; 3 of Charles Cornwallis; 2 of François comte de Grasse; 2 of Charles Gravier Vergennes; 2 of Charles de Houx de Vioménil; and one each of 33 other individuals. The portrait of Marie Joseph Paul Lafayette is in color. The portrait of Étienne Maurice Gérard was evidently included in error, in connection with a mistaken reference in The Château de Rochambeau to the French minister in Philadelphia in 1782 as Mr. Gérard (p. 357); the minister at that time was Anne-César, chevalier de La Luzerne, who succeeded Conrad Alexandre Gérard in the post in 1779. The volume has a typed index of illustrations at the front. The spine covering is wanting, and covers detached.

Louis-Alexandre Berthier Collection, 1780-1783
Title:
Louis-Alexandre Berthier Collection 1780-1783
The collection consists primarily of a set of handcolored, topographical, manuscript maps (111 of them), created by Louis-Alexandre Berthier, an officer on General Rochambeau's staff, depicting the historic overland march of the French and American forces from Philipsburg, New York, to Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781 and their return march to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1782. Accompanying these maps is Berthier’s journal (in French), providing a detailed description and explanation of the routes covered by the maps. In addition, there are documents and memoranda concerning French military events in America, Berthier’s departure from France in 1780, and his return to France via the West Indies in 1782-1783.

Rochambeau family. Rochambeau papers and Rochambeau family cartographic archive, 1669-1823.
Title:
Rochambeau papers and Rochambeau family cartographic archive, 1669-1823.
The collection consists of two main parts, Rochambeau Papers, which contain Correspondence and Other Papers, and the Cartographic Archive. The correspondence, documents, and memoirs richly document the comte de Rochambeau's role as commander of the French troops in the American Revolution (as do field maps included in the Cartographic Archive). The Cartographic Archive consists of atlases and maps collected by three generations of the Rochambeau Family, from the reign of Louis XIV through the wars of the French Revolution and the Empire. Almost all of the correspondence is addressed to the comte de Rochambeau at his headquarters during the American Revolution. Principal correspondents include George Washington, the marquis de Lafayette, Admiral de Grasse, the chevalier de La Luzerne, and the marquis de Ségur. The correspondence concerns the planning and execution of military campaigns, the treason of Benedict Arnold, the mutiny of the Pennsylvania line of the Army, the financing of the French campaign, and relations between the United States and France. The documents include papers from the Wethersfield, Newport, Dobbs Ferry, and Philadelphia Conferences. The manuscript of the comte de Rochambeau's autobiography is also present. The Cartographic Archive contains 565 maps and atlases of Europe, America, the West Indies, and Russia collected by the Rochambeaus. The archive is especially noteworthy for containing Rochambeau's field maps from the American Revolution. These include a manuscript atlas of French encampments on its march to Yorktown, drawn and colored by Louis-Alexandre and Charles-Louis Berthier. Other mapmakers represented include: Le Rouge, Johann Baptist Homann and his heirs, Eugène Henry Friex, Georges Friex, Alexis Hubert Jaillot, Pierre Gosse, Jr., Daniel Pinet, Matthaeus Seutter, Joshua Fry, Peter Jefferson, Bernard Roman, Cassini, Santini and Dezauche.
