Title:
Collection, 1923-1992.
Comprises correspondence (primarily incoming) and several works by King from 1939-92. Correspondence content varies from discussions about his works, reviews, publishing, PEN, and politics, to personal information. The bulk of correspondence is from Edith Borne, Ronald Bottrall, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Clifford Kitchin, Robert Liddell, Harold Nicolson, Desmond Stewart, and Godfrey Winn. Also in the correspondence series are letters from King to Alexander Walton (1956-63), discussing King's experiences and impressions of Greece and Japan during his employment with the British Council. Letters from King to his mother date from 1931 to 1992, but the bulk are from 1957-63, and cover a variety of topics. The majority of the novels King wrote between 1949 and 1978 are represented in the collection in typescript or holographic form, most of which have been heavily edited. Some of his novels in this collection are The Custom House (1961), The Last of the Pleasure Gardens (1965), The Waves behind the Boat (1967), A Domestic Animal (1970), and The Needle (1975).

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

Clement Greenberg papers
Title:
Clement Greenberg papers
The papers of influential New York author and art critic Clement Greenberg measure 8.6 linear feet and date from 1937 to 1983. The bulk of the papers consists of letters from art critics, artists, family, friends, curators, collectors, publishers, galleries, and museums, with scattered letters from Greenberg. Also found are Greenberg's business and financial records along with small amounts of biographical material, printed material, and writings consisting of two reports. Correspondence includes letters to Greenberg, often documenting the lives and careers of many of the correspondents in significant detail, and scattered copies of Greenberg’s replies. Much of the correspondence is rich and substantive, and is indicative of Greenberg’s influence in the art world. Correspondents include Darby Bannard, Ethel Baziotes, Anthony Caro, Richard Diebenkorn, Piero Dorazio, Andre Emmerich, Paul Feeley, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Goodnough, Adolf Gottleib, Hans Hofmann, Philippe Hosiasson, Jacob Kainen, Rosalind Krauss, Robert Motherwell, Ken Moffett, Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Beverly Pepper, Ludwig Sander, David Smith, Kimber Smith, Clyfford Still, Anne Truitt, Leslie Waddington and many others. Biographical material includes notes from an interview with Greenberg conducted by Deborah Solomon in 1983. Greenberg's personal business and financial records include correspondence and other documentation related to Greenberg's appearances, such as for lectures and on television, and documents relating to Greenberg's testimony at the Mark Rothko Trial in 1974.Artwork consists of one etching by Kurt Wisenski. Although the papers contain very few of Greenberg's writings about art, there are lists of artists and reports written by Greenberg on the state of art in Japan and India in 1967 which are probably related to his membership in the American Committee for Cultural Freedom. Printed material includes scattered clippings concerning art and exhibition announcements. One series of access restricted papers contains documents relating to Greenberg's role as an executor for the David Smith estate.

MacNeice, Louis, 1907-1963. Louis MacNeice papers, 1960-1969.
Title:
Louis MacNeice papers, 1960-1969.
Letters, manuscripts, and books, including four letters from MacNeice to the poet and editor, Geoffrey Grigson. The manuscripts, either by or about MacNeice, include ten of his last poems. Five of these have been published in SOLSTICE, 1961, and four in THE BURNING PERCH, 1963. Drafts of the first group of poems were written in a personal notebook used by the poet while he worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation. In another similar notebook is a partial draft of his play "The Administrator." Both notebooks are in the collection. Also, an untitled, unpublished poem of seven stanzas, "Tingling [born] the burning island" written on the reverse of a map. Works about NacNeice include manuscripts of a memoir and a radio portrait by Robert Pocock. The portrait has poignant comments and personal reminiscences by twenty of the poet's contemporaries, including John Betjeman, Anthony Blunt, W.H. Auden, E.R. Dodds, Stephen Spender, and others. Both Auden and a literary coterie of Spender, Betjeman, William Empson, and Cyril Connoly taped disucssions of MacNeice and his poetry. Also, thirty-eight books that were in MacNeice's personal library. Most are autographed by him, and many have marked passages and marginal notes. One of the books, Euripides' ALCESTIS AND OTHER PLAYS, is heavily annotated, apparently for a broadcast production.
